CLINTON—One. example of the progress made by famjJjep on Fium And Horae Development is the Wsrren family of the Big Pin£y Grove community. This family's homo was destroyed in the spring of 1857. Prior to this the family had just completed remodeling their home. They didn’t, get discouraged after losing their home, but moved in the old school house, left va cant by the eensolidtsion of schools, and lived there until the home shown here was completed. This home is underpinned; the outside covered with asbestos shin gle; and all windows and doors weather stripped and airtight; as well as screened; both side and front porches are cement. Inside the home the six room* are paint ed with well planned color shemes; knotted pine paneling in kitchen and family room. The family plans include the fol lowing improvements that have not bees completed; finished floors, complete kitchen, add running wa ter and bath. The house was built with few adjustments according to the Extension Flan used. Another example of Improve ments made by families in this county is the new home of Mrs. Nelia Robinson of the Littlefield community. This home is a result of planning and saving from a 52 acre farm. Mrs. Robinson and her granddaughter. Joan are enjoying the following conveniences of their nav* house; modern one-wall kit chen with running hot and cold water, clothing storage in each bedroom, telephone and TV; attrac tive color scheme, new furniture and finished floors are also a part of the new home shown in the pic tic*. Gardening was pushed this year all ever the county and as a result some of the best variety gardens ever produced in this county sup plied the growers with fresh vege tables for eating daily as well as canning and freezing. Follov. mg are two pictures of foods conserv ed by two families in the county, One shows foods canned by Mrs. Christina Peterson of the Little field community. There is a freez er (comer of freezer shown in pic ture) in the home but the Peter son’s found that both freezing and canning were necessary to con serve enough food for the family of five. Gale Robinson, a 4-Her is shown placing vegetables in the freezer of Mrs. Mary J. Bennett of the Lit tlefield community, Mrs. Bennett, who is « home demonstration club member and a Farm and Home Development family, works as corn unity leader with 4-Hers in the community. Gale is learning all about the home freezer a* well as processing vegetables for the freez er through this leader. Another 4-Her learning ail about her project and doing a good job is Joan William* of the same com munity. She is shown here getting tip* on cutting from her grand mother. Joan makes most of her school clothing and participates in th# Annual 4-H Fashion Show'. Last year lih* won first, place with a adiooi outfit. Pridgen's farm operation is hs hr says it: “A man just isn't farming i if he feeds his family from the j store. The first thing for a farmer ; to do, T he says he is farming, is j to grow and save enough food on the farm to feed his family the • year round" This is just what ; Pridgen does. Each family on Farm and Home : Development each year makes j some improvements. These range j from changes as minor as orderly ; arrangement of a room to build- 1 ing a. new home. Five Farm and j Home Development families have j moved into new homes in the past ; twelve months, 4-Hers have been ; of great help here too Some have | used their projects to increase the j food supply and income, while! others have helped with the con- j servation program and still others j have been instrumental in im- j proving the appearance of the I homes. The stories of the individual farm I families mentioned elsewhere in I this article will further illustrate j the progress of some of our Farm and Home Development families j in the county. —— One way to combat insects is to j plant insect resistant varieties.
