Writer Tells How NAACP Got Started
B> VICTOR CALVERTON
NEW YORK CITY <ANP> Do
you know how the National Asso
ciation for the Advancement of
Colored People got started?
Do you know why the organiza
tion was established?
The NAACP was organized be
cause of a horrible lynching in
1908 in Springfield, 111., the home
of Abraham Lincoln who was the
l(Uh President of the United States.
Sponsors of the meeting to plan an
organization to do something about
lynching and other injustices a
gainst. the Negro were aroused
over the lynching in Lincoln’s
home state, though he was born in
Kentucky.
Persons at this meeting included
Oswald Garrison Vil'ard, Rabbi
Stephen S. Wise, the Rev. Francis
J. Grimko, Washington, D. C; Miss
iVTary White, Ovington. Dr. W, E
R Dußois and others. As a result
of this meeting, the NAACP was
organized in !909. The Crisis maga
zine was started in 1910, and it be
came the first. Negro monthly pub

ginning relied on, the Constitu

the virtue of social justice for
all Americans without regard

ionality or previous condition
j of servitude. It based its pro
gram on law and order and
has licvfi countenanced v»o
ienrr or lawlessness in any
form
j Americans have in the NAACP
a model organization fighting for
the constitutional rights of a mi
nority group with the tools provid
ed for that fight in the basic law
of the laud. No other organization
j in America has used these legal
i weapons as widely and as success
! fully for a minority group as the
NAACP.
The NAACP is not a foreign or
ganization, It Isn't even just *
Negro organization. It is an inter
racial organization, and has been
interracial from the beginning. It
is an organization brought to birth
by white and Negro Americans
who rightfully should be consider
ed the descendants of the abolit
ionist whose efforts resulted in
the emancipation of the slaves.
Within a quarter of a century
after it had been organized, tnc
NAACP had won many members
in the South including some whits
members. Some groups in the South
who were fearful for the NAACP
for years after it was organized,
have become its most courageous
supporters.
