Do you know why the organiza tion was established? The NAACP was organized be cause of a horrible lynching in 1908 in Springfield, 111., the home of Abraham Lincoln who was the l(Uh President of the United States. Sponsors of the meeting to plan an organization to do something about lynching and other injustices a gainst. the Negro were aroused over the lynching in Lincoln’s home state, though he was born in Kentucky. Persons at this meeting included Oswald Garrison Vil'ard, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, the Rev. Francis J. Grimko, Washington, D. C; Miss iVTary White, Ovington. Dr. W, E R Dußois and others. As a result of this meeting, the NAACP was organized in !909. The Crisis maga zine was started in 1910, and it be came the first. It is an organization brought to birth by white and Negro Americans who rightfully should be consider ed the descendants of the abolit ionist whose efforts resulted in the emancipation of the slaves. Within a quarter of a century after it had been organized, tnc NAACP had won many members in the South including some whits members.
