C. policemen in or ganized gambling. Representative Adam Clayton Fowell of New York, recently issued a statement asking for greater public concern over crime and corruption in the nation’s capital. The New York Congressman, himself a Baptist clergyman, pastor of Harlem’s Abyssinian Church, Indicated that he would seek to call a meeting of inter-denominational minis ters in the District of Colum bia to study the situation there, and to make plans for a crusade to elevate Washing ton community standards. The problem Mr. Powell stated was mainly one of public apathy and indifference, plus the fail ure of the responsible public officials to cooperate. The. proposed conference. Powell said, would study the feasibility of a Congressional probe into Wash ington’s crime situation. It would also analyze tha degree to which crime statistics are being misused by Rntl-lntegesdilon forces. At the earliest possible moment after consulting with my col leagues of several denominations in Washington.
