C, May 3 Eli Ward, colored, who at tempted the murder of Mr. W. H. Farmer at Rich Squa re sometime'in January last, was hanged at Jackson, Northampton county, today. He was cool and firm till the last. Robert Williams and Wal ter Harris, both colored. were also hanged at Hicksford Va., to-day for murder. The history of Ward's case is as follows : Some months since he broke into the house with the in tent to kill and rob Mr. "Far mer," a very worth' citizen of Northampton county. He had his trial in Northamp ton county, was convicted, and sentenced to le hanged. His sentence w ould have been executed more than a month ago had not his counsel suc ceeded in having the Gover nor extend the time until to day. The jail of Northamp ton, not being very secure, the prisoner was sent to War- ren, wnicn nas rnemost se cure and convenient jail in the State, for safe keeping. Yesterday thesheriff of North ampton, accompanied by the jailer and undertaker, came for "Ward," taking him to Jackson. "Ward" is reported to have tome projerty, and up to committing this grave of fense had a fair record ; he, however, got into bad com pany, drank freely and was easily led 'Into crime. A white pine tree was cut recently two miles south of Shade Mills, in Garrett coun ty near the site of the old Rraddock road, and convert ed into shingles. It was a large tree and by expert woodsmen estimated to be atleast three hundred years old. In cutting it upthesaw in filing through home tough substance, attracted atten tion, and investigation dis closed a bullet imbedded in two inches of the heart. The tree at this point wa? 32 in ches in diameter. About one third of the bullet wa? sawed away, the remainder weigh ing at least an ounce, being left in the coi ner of a butt end of a shingle. The ball is supposed to have been shot from a musket of one of Brad dock's men during the cam paign which culminated in the disaster at FortDuQues ne. In this event the bullet was embedded in the tree 133 years ago, each year's g; owth buryjng it deeper. It is a mowt interesting memento of jth ill-starred campaign of 1775 Jialtimonf Sun. Putting the money in their pockets the bold in truder? hacked to the door and escaped. An alarm wa? given and the party started in hot pur suit. The robbers were over taken a short distance from town, and a light ensued, in which one of the pursuing party, Wm. lSrady, was shot and probally fatally wound ed The robbers succeeded in making their escape and reached themountains. The deputy sheriff and a well arm ed posse started after then: at an early hour yesterday morning and, overhauling them, another fight ensued. The robbers were lodged be hind a barricade of rocks and after a terrible fight of half an hour, one of the robbers was killed and another woun ded, but the third still holds out and until aniunition is ex hausted, there is no prosjK.rt of his surrendering. Sheriff Jackson and posse left this city last night well armed for the scene of trouble, and lit is probable that the des perate villian will be obliged to surrender. The attacking party had three hordes killed but nobody was shot, though bullets fell like rain around them. Aetr.s und Ohscvver. Newt Front luc 2ooi:t. Chicago, May 6. A special from Arkansas City says : Suffering of the baffled boo mers finds most prominent evidence along the Northern border. Yesterday 1,000 wagons on the march down, and 800 wagons on the way back were counted. The groves in Arkansas and Wal nut river valleys, that offer ed camps for boomer? before the descent, are filling again with returning unfortunates.. There are hundreds of famil ies among them who have sold everything to make the trip and now have nothing left. The sight of men, wo men, and children, who are thus unprovided for and des olate, with mere frame? of horses surviving to drag them along, is pitiable. Guthrie still holds the ma jority of the population and is not yet sv metrically form ed. Oklahoma is the most pro mising town site. Captain ('ouch, an old successor to Boomer Payne, was Satur day, electwl mayor, defeating a preacher, whose platform was against gambling and whiskey. As long as the lat ter is excluded, as it is now, a serious trouble cannot oe- cur in Oklahoma. Wilming ton Messenger. I). Poone. N. C. Kes: lent Physician. (f!iv t ihmm" i-o UK. L. (. . KLL 1.
