a memorial to George Washington,
the man and the Mason: Its form is
inspired by the great towers, built

harbors, and from whose summits
permanent burning flares that could
be seer for miles, at sea guided the
mariner on his way. The great tower
of the memorial represents to the
world at large the guiding spirit
of Washington in statesmanship and
