YOUNG T'^nrTT" vvn ji-.i'tT '"rtr. ^ IO?Jesus* Standard of Greatness. / Jesus with llis disciples was on His way to Capernaum for the last time. He was soon to leave for Jerusalem where lie was to die on the cruel cross for the sins of the world, tie sought retirement in order to make clearer to the disciples the meaning of the cross. They were yet unable to understand Him. It was a most pitiable sight to behold the Son of Cod facing humiliation and death ?r man's salvation and even the disciples failing to understand the meaning of His suffering. !. The Disciples Disputing as to Who Should Be the Greatest (Mark :33-37). 1. Jesus'searching question (v. 33). His omniscience enabled Him to discern their secret thoughts. The fact thai the disciples were wrangling about otiic'isil position while Jesus was facing humiliation and death shows how completely He was alone in the world. 2. The :-;ilont disciples (v. 31). The revelation of the selflshuess of their hearts made them ashamed in His presence. The realization that the eye of the omniscient Lord is over us is the sure and only cure for self ish wrangling among Christians. 3. The stinging rebuke (v\. 35-37). (1) "If any man desire to he tlrst the same shall he last of all and servant of all." True greatness expresses u?: .. . ms-ch <11 wciiii; Willing 1(1 UllxG II1C IflSt and least place ami to he a servant Of others. (2) His teaching illustrated (vv. 3G. 37). This lie did by an acted parable I of placing a little child in their midst. A little child is a symbol of dependance and ignorance. By word and example He showed that true greatness is expressed iu willingness to aid the weak, instruct ttie ignorant, and serve the needy. SI. The Ambitious Request of | James and John (Mark 10:35-45). j 1. What it was (vv. 35-37). It yvasi for tiie positions of pre-eminence in the kingdom Christ had told then) of the awfu! ngon.v of the cross and also of the glory which should follow. While their request reveals pride and selfish ambition yet faith in their Lord and a right desire were not wholly lacking. It was not en | ,tirely for their personal glory that they made this request, hut because of their personal desire *o be with their Lord. 2. Jesus' reply (vv. 38-15). (1) To James and John (vv. 38-40). I a. Their misconception rebuked. "Ye know not what ye ask." b. Positions of glory in Christ's I kingdom are earned, not obtained through* fa\?.i or arbitrary assign ; mont. The way to honor is through suffering. The cup which they were to drink was ail thin was embraced In flio agony of lilt- cross, (.'hrisi cop coded tluu the positions which they craved wore obtainable. hut in a different way from what They thought. Tlie way to places of glory tn Christ's kingdom is through lowly, self-forgetful service and suffering (2) To the ten disciples (vv. 41-45). a. Their displeasure (v. 41 > The ten disciples were displeased with Ihe request of .fumes and .John. Their displeasure was hecause they were not free from the same selfish ambition; their action was not prompted hy righteous indignation. b. True greatness declared (vv. 4245). To minister to others is greuf. er than to he ministered unto (v. 43). Among tile Gentile nations, greatness was conceded to those who exercised . authority over others. This is the (world's conception today. Among thc followers of Christ a different standard prevails. The standard of Christ's kingdom Js to forget self in devoted f DID UrMUl Till? Childre] have been playing in all the progrct sivc cities of the country in recen years, and it is properly looked upoi as a very important part of thei practical education. It teaches ther many useful lessons in civics, and a once brings them face to face wit! the vital fact that health and heaut; go hand in hand. It is interesting to note also tlia in these clean-up efforts childrei often are very much more efficien iand thorough than arc grown pel sons. Youth is wide-eyed.
