WILKES KILLER GETS 10 YEARS North Wilkes bo ro ? Miss Myrt Woodie, the 43 -year-old moun tain woman who said she shot and killed her brother-in-law for 21 years' abuse of her sister and their children, was sentenced in Wilkes court to 10 years in pri son. Last week the woman, whose marksmanship with a .32 rife re sulted in death to Tam Miller on a fountain path on the Blue Ridge December 1, entered a plea of guilty of second degree mur der and Judge Dan K. Moore heard the evidence which dis closed by her own admission she had shot MilW Just after a quarrel at her home and while he was proceeding to his house, his arms filled with groceries. Sheriff C. G. Poindexter quoted her as saying that she "had stood it just as long as she could," re ferring to what she called abuse of nis wife and children. She said that on several occasions he had run his wife and children out into the severe cold on the Blue Ridge. Commenting on the case from the bench. Judge Moore said^iat evidence of the woman is sor rowing a rifle that day indicated that she may have planned and deliberated the shooting and that was probably under the im eion that she was doing the right thing. He also stated that no person can take over the law for punishment, and proceeded with the sentence. Judge Moore explained that under the plea he had a latitude of from 2 to 30 years in the sentence and that he was giving the defendant two thirds of the benefit of the lati tude provided by law.
