North Caro lina's worst polio epidemic crossed the 1,600 case mark to day. # The day brought reports of 27 new cases to the State Board of Health and the State's total of cases for the year of 1,622. The total now exceeds the State's worst previous epidemic by 744 cases the worst previous year was 1944 when a total of 878 cases were reported. However, a slight drop in new cases was noted in the week end ing today. SQme 160 cases were reported during the week com pared with 194 last week and 180 the week before.
