Official State Election
Returns Are Released
Raleigh ? The official canvass
of the Nov. 2 general election
showed President Truman de
feated Thomas E. Dewey by
200,543 votes in North Carolina.
The State Board of Elections
met to certify th Nov. 2 returns.
Its canvass showed that Presi
dent Truman received 450,070
Tar Heel votes, Dewey 258,572,
J. Storm Thurmond 69,652, and
Henry Wallace 3,915.
The Elections Board also adopt
ed a resolution, on the recom
mendation of Chairman Hubert
F. Olive, praising all State and
county election officials for their
work in "an especially honest"
election.

The decline in United States
exports, domestic and foreign
merchandise, from $988,200,000
in August to $926,200,000 in
September extended to all Con
tinents and the decline in gener
al imports from $598,400,000 to

tinents except North America
and Europe, according to the De
partment of Commerce. The
largest dollar decline in exports
from August to September- oc
curred in exports tp Asia, from
$169,200,000 to $145,100,000.
HEW HOMES
The number of new homes on
which construction work was
started dropped sharply in Oct- ,
obber from the September total,
but the ten-months total for 1948
is still well ahead of the same
period a year ago. The Labor De
partment reported the October
figure was only 72,000 compared
with a 80,000 in September and
94,000 in October, 1947. ]

Government statistics indicate
that marriages are on the wane.
The Public Health Service re
ports that 57,185 marriage lic
enses were issued in September

per cent, from September 1947,
and 7,006, or 10.9 per cent from
the September record, set in 1946.
