Lions Club Program
The Boone Lions Club met last
Tuesday in the Daniel Boone Ho
tel dining room, with former and
present tailtwisters having charge
of the program. Several stunts
were "pulled" on various mem
bers of the club, for the amuse
ment of the others.
Sale of Centennial season tic
kets was discussed by Lion Presi
Bob Agle, with members being
reminded that the tickets would
soon be withdrawn from sale at
the special reduced rate offered
by Centennial officials.
At the director's meeting, which
followed, a committee was ap
pointed to select the Lions pio
neer candidate for the Centen
I
nial festival They subsequently
selected L M. Moretz, former
mayor of Boone and now a justice
of the peace with office in Boone.
Miss Barbara Jones is the club's
candidate for queen. She was
selected as the Lions Sweetheart
at a recent talent show.
It was also voted at the direc
tor's meeting to donate $500 to
the Watauga Hospital, Incorpor
ated, in their present drive for
funds to improve the local insti
tution.
WACS
The Woman's Army Corps cel
ebrated its seventh birthday on
May 14. The Wacs are now a
permanent part of the peace-time
Army. The Corps', authorized
strength is only 8,000 officers and
enlisted women, compared with
a wartime peak of 100,00.

The people of Watauga county will
take notice that Governor Scott has
called a special election to be held
on June 4th, 1MB. on the two propo
sitions ot whether the State of North
Carolina shall Issue two hundred
million dollars in bonds for paving
and repairing secondary roads In the
state. and the Issuance of twenty
five million dollars to be used by the
counties for school plant construction
and repairs. Under instructions from
the State Board of Elections the re
gistration books for this special elec
tion will open on Saturday, May 7th,
at B 00 o'clock, and remain open un
til sunset on Saturday. May list. The
various registrars In the county will
be at their polling places for regis
tering voters on the three Saturdays
of May 7th, May 14th and May 21st.
This Is not s special registration,
therefore all persons who are now
registered on the general election re
gistration books will NOT have to re
gister again for this special election.
If you are not now registered In the
general election registration book in
your residence precinct you will
have to register to vote in this special
road and school bond election. If you
are not certain you are properly re
gistered 'now, you had better check
with your precinct registrar on one
of the three Saturdays mentioned
