This figure is given by the American Mutual Liability Insur ance Company's Institute tor Saf er Living, which predicts more than 1 1 AO fatalities resulting from Christmas holiday season driving. This is 200 more auto deaths than during the eight-day holiday period last year. Principal factors responsible for this seasonal increase will be bad weather conditions in many areas, increased holiday travel. Increased social activity and gen erally poor visibility. The two long holiday weekends will again increase driving exposure this year according to the Institute. To be sure that you are not counted among this year's crop of Christmas fatalities, DON't . . . 1 ? drive any more than is necessary. , 2? drive on long trips if a train or bus or other transportation is convenient. Former Boone Minister Dies The Rev. Walter San/ord Good night of Vale, formerly of Wa tauga county, died in a Morgan ton hospital Sunday, November 29, at the age of 73 year*. Rev. Mr. Goodnight wai a bro ther of the late Mr. J. L. Good night of Perkinsville, and owned a home in that aection before going into the miniitry At one time he owned and operated a (hoc repair shop in Boone. Funeral rites were conducted in the chapel of the Hickory Fun eral Home at 2 p. m., Nov. 30, with the Rev. A. M. Yoder of Whitnel and the Rev. J. C. Honeycutt of Albemarle officiating. He was buried in Oakwood cemetery, in Hickory. The Rev. Mr. Goodnight was of the Church of God faith, travel ing about the couhtry for approxi mately a quarter of a century lec turing on the "Revelations." His travels took him through the South and the Southwest. He re tired about a year ago because of failing health. The deceased was born in Lin coln county February 20, 1878, son of the late Joseph N. and Harriette Rhoney Goodnight. His wife, the former Miss Nora Boggs, died June 17, 1951. Surviving the minister are two sisters, Mrs. J. P. Chapman of Hickory and Mrs. J. L. Yount of Vale. Covered Dish Supper Is Held Fifty-three people- met Friday evening at 7:00 p. m. on Decem ber 4, at the Cove Creek High school for a covered dish supper and meeting for all ot the test demonstration farm families in the county. This group enjoyed a. very delicious covered dish sup per, followed by a business meet ing. The group voted to continue their anual farm and home tours next summer. Plans were made for some changes in the judging of the farms and homes on the tour. Special plans are being made for a tour of all the homes along with the farms. The home which has made the most im provement during 1954 will be selected on the tour, also the farm which has , Improved moat and in addition to this the farm and home combined that has im proved most as a whole will be selected. After the business session the entire group enjoyed an hour ot recreation led by Mrs. W. R. Vines, the home and county agent. The committee responsible for the supper were Mrs. W. R. Vines of Bethel and Mr. Howard Ed misten of Cove Creek. UVIlA COSTS For the fifth consecutive month, living coats edged up a bit in the month ending in mid-October. The Increase of two- tenths of one per cent during the month brought the index of the Bureau of Labor Statistics to another record high ? 11.15 per cent of the 1M7-49 average, or 1.1 per cent above a year ago. Decorations To Be judged Here Plans for the annual Home Dec orations Contest, sponsored Joint ly by the Boone Junior Woman's Club, the Blue Ridge Garden Club and the Home and Garden Department of the Worthwhile Women's Club were announced this week. The Blue Ridge Garden Club sponsors the contest for Lawn Displays and roof 'decoration*.. The Junior Woman's Club spon sors the Door Decorations divi lion. The Horn* and Garden group will sponsor the Window Decoration Contest. Thia include* decorations which can been aeen from the itreet through the win dow. Firat prize, of $5, second prize of $3, third prize, and honorable mention will be given in each of the three divisions. Honorable mention also will be given to dis plays made by clubs or groups.
