ANSWER: Ye*, farmers in North Carolina have recognized the importance of fertilizer in securing high yields for many years. In the past 15 years the amount of fertilizer used in the state has doubled. In the crop year 1932-53 Tar Heel farmers used 1,850,000 toAs of plant food. QUESTION: Should I treat my home garden (100 x 200 feet) for root' knot cantrol? ANSWER: Do not consider treating your garden unlets there is real trouble and you are sure of the cause. If root knot nema todes are the primary problem, select an inexpensive fumigant If a soil-borne fungys or facterial disease is the main probelm, soil treatment may not be practical or it may pay you to treat with a more expensive material such as chloropicrin. These materials are toxic to humans and animals and care must be exercised in their use. Obaerve all precautions given by manufacturers. In the first Christmas Seal Sale in the United States in 1907, $S,000 was raised to aid a few needy tuberculosis patients. In 1952, the Christmas Seal Sale raised $23,300,000 to fight TB through health education, medi cal research, case finding, and rehabilitation. In 1953, tobacco consumption per person 15 years or older (in the United States and its over seas armed forces) was practically the same as during 1952 ? about 10 per day per person. Purchase Of Beef May Bolster prices The federal government's pur- 1 chases of beef for domestic uses and export, started last April, are designed to strengthen the na tion^ cattle market, according to L. E. Tuckwiller, Watauga county farm agent for the State College Extension Service. Mr. Tuckwiller says recent re ports show that the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture will Rave purchased between 220 and 22S million pounds of beef by the year's end. This is the equivalent of more than 750,(fc0 head of cat tle, according to the county agent. Sharp drops in cattle prices, are' largerly the result of increas ed marketings from a Vecord na tional cattle herd of 94 million head. Drought has complicated' the situation by stepping up marketings, particularly of low er-grade cattle, and reducing the normal demand for animals for high-finish feeding and herd re placements. ?The bulk of the government's beef purchases are being distri buted through the school* lunch program and nonprofit institu tions. About 18 million porihds were purchased by the Foreign Operations Administration for overseas distribution. Because producer price pro blems are greatest this year in tbf cheaper grades of cattle, owing to prolonged drouth con ditions. the government contracts have called (or commercial and utility grade carcasses, with greatest emphasis on cutter and canner grades. * Former Cuban President Carlos Prio Socmrras was arrested in Mi ami, Fla* on a charge of conspir ing to export arms and imple ments of war from the U.
