Planning Group Local Health Councill Meets j|| A meeting of the planning com mute*' of the Watauga Health Council was l>ekT Thursday even ing, July 19th. Dr. William Happer, health of ficer of Caldwell county, present ed the experience of that county in the use of their new health center. He tinted that the depart ment staff, before that time hous ed in the Courthouse basement, carried out a limited program not only because of limited space, but because of limited calls from the public. The general public did not look to such an agency for services, feeling the program was for those unable to plan for their own needs. La tor, with the adequate space and facilities of the health cen ter, it was soon recognized that the health department reached out to help meet the needs of the entire community. The famma globulin program carried out as that county met a polio epidemic lait year, could never have been poasible if the department had still been in the cramped quarters of the Courthouse basement So the program has expanded. Now a heart clinic is doing a big task in locating and diagnosisg heart disease, getting cases under treat* ment by thf family physician early, particularly in rheumatic heart disease, before severe heart damage has occurred, thus pre venting recurrent attacks. With no increase in staff the program has developed nearly three times its previous volume and scope. Today public health is meeting BI6 CAPACITY! Limestone will also be available for cropland to permit the use of legumes and grasses for soil improvement and protection. A soil test is required for all fall seeding practices and the ap plication of limestone. If the farmer does not have one, con tainers and information sheets are available at the county of fice. Returns now may be had within a week or ten days. This week the committee mailt ed out approvals for all requests oi? file, including a number of approvals for permanent type practices such as open' ditch drainage and tile drainage. Farm ers should also consider their needs for drainage, and, if any exist, they should contact the county office for further infor mation and approval. In these days of limited pro duction, farmers should give more consideration to conserva tion on theiij farms. Practices under tye Agricultural Conser vation Program are designed for this purpose, and no farmer can afford to pass by the opportunity the Goverhment offers for shar ing the cost of real conservation on his farm.
