This loving invitation to salvation frdn sin and finally to eternal life in the world to come is extended to all mankind. How ever, "Many are called, but few are chosen." Why are not all chosen who are called? The fact is that there is a sense in which the call is extended to all. But God chooses only those who obey Him. He rejects those who reject and disobey Him. The divine call ays, "Whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely." Rev. 22: 17. God's elect nation is made up of "whosoever will." The non-elect are "whosoever won't." A careful examination of 1 Pet. 1: 2 reveals the following facts concerning election: (1) Election is of God. He decided by His wisdom who might be elected and how it was to be done. (2) Election is of the Son. He shed His blood to maVe it possible. (3) Election is of the Spirit. He reveals by the gospel how it is to be done. (Election is of man. He determines by his obedience that he will be elected. In comparing divine election with our own governmental elections, we might say that divine election is by majority vote. God has cast His vote in our favor. Satan, desiring your eternal damnation, has cast his vote against Us. The final vote is cast by ourselves. We vote for ourselves by choosing God's way and walking in it. We vote against ourselves by rejecting the gospel of Christ. "It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put It from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles." Acts 13: 4#. We vote against ourselves when we put the gospel of Christ from us instead of receiving it and obeying it. In 1 Thess 1: 4. Paul says, "Knowing, brethem beloved, your election of God." He was writing "unto the church of the Thessa lonians." 1 Thess. 1: I. Thus those in God's family, the church, are called brethren, and are at the same time referred to as God's elect people. By obedience to the gospel, they had been elected to salvation from sin. However, their election to eternal life had not been made sure as yet. Peter, writing to members of the church, refers to them as God's elect people. Yet he gives this exhortation: "Wherefore the rather, bfelhern, give dillgencfc to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fa il." 2 Pet. 1: 10. Salvatiofl from sin arid admittance into God's spiritual family Is contingent upon obedience to the gospel of Christ. Faith, repentance, confession, and baptism are steps on the way to salvation from But even those already in God's family must "give diligence""o make their calling and election to eternal life sure. They will keep from falling only by adding to their faith the Christian graces 0f virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity. Ood calls you and want* you to be elected. But God will not, sav* you and He will not take you to heaven against your will. It ia God's plan and wisdMit that you obey Him. Whether you are elected depends upon yourself. The Scripture says, "according as He hath choaen us in Him." Eph. 1: 4. You must be "in Christ" to be'chosen of God because God chooses men according to that Mitflitlafi. He Invitee you to believe the gospel and be baptized into Christ. thus making your election into God's family a reality. If you will then continue to study and learn His will and live ac cording to it, you can make your calling and election to eternal life in the world to come just as sure aa Ood'l frMiilsits. ... H.
