Mr. Christ ian de Kener demonstrated a num ber of rare animals from all parts of the world. New Book Shelves Our primary teacher feels that the small children should have their books on shelves low enough for them to reach. These shelves are now being installed in their rooms and they are quite please<J about them. Mrs. Edmisten Visits School Our county supervisor, Mrs. Des sie Mae Edmisten was a visitor in our school last week. We are at ways glad to have her and she is always so willing to help out wher ever she can. She is always parti cularly interested in the progress of the science program. Right now she is doing some special work lrf art with the idea of probably es tablishing more definite procedur es for specfic grades. Report On Halloween Carnival The Halloween Carnival receipts were approximately $375.00 and the expenses were $37.25 plus the cost of the turkey which will cost around ten dollars. We feel that special mention here should go to Mr. J. D. Phillips who donated his popcorn machine and' his own services in operating it. The boys and girls of thf seven th grade did a good job of decorat ing the lunchroom for the carnival. The whole room had a festive look created with the pumpkins, cats, owls, witches, colored leaves and corn. Crepe paper hung from all the light fixtures. The winners in the king and queen contest were: King, Delmas fcreene of the fifth grade and Wan da Miller, queen of the second grade. 2nd place king, Lerory Cof fey, 4th grade; 2nd place queen, Nancy Coffey, 5th grade. The kings and queen for each grade were: 1st grade: Queen, Linda Proffit; King, Gary MoreU. 2nd grade: Queen ? Wanda Mil ler; King Butch Miller. 3rd Grade: Queen? Helen Low alski; King, Jerry South. 4th Grade: Queen? Polly Claw son; King, Lcroy Coffeey. 5th Grade: Queen, Nancy Coffey; King, Delmas Greene. 6th Grade: Queen? Elaine Shoe make; King, Allen Miller. 7th Grade: Queen ? Barabara Penley; King, Austin Moretr. 8th Grade: Queen ? Georgia Gail Norris; King, Alvin Stansberry. Other contest winners were: Costume Parade, adult ? Mr. Troy Norris, Mrs. Tom Jackson. Children? Mary Darwin Marsh, Jimmy Marsh, Albert Miller, Jr., Beth Williams. The oldest man, Mr. George Lookabill; Turkey guessing, Mr. Russell Norris; Cake guessing, Mrs. C. R. McKinney; Bean guessing, Mrs. Minnie Lookabill, Mrs. Nancy Winebarger, Mrs. Pearl Lookabill; Baby contest, Maria Greene, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Johrf Greene; Pumpkin guessing, Mrs. Clint Mil ler; Biggest family, The Ward Mil lers. The rooms with the best country store exhibits were: Grammar grade, Mrs. Ruth Winkler; Pri mary, Mrs. Daisy Adams. The judges who came to the Paul Said To Mr. Ed: PAUL The customer settled himself and let the barber put the towel around him. Customer: "Before we start, I know the weather's awful, I don't care who wins the next bif fight, and I don't bet on the horse races. I know I'm getting thin on top, but I don't mind that. PAUL WINKLER school to make these decisions were: Mrs. Hamp Clawson, Mrs. Celia Greene. Nr. E. B. Fox Leaves The whole school and commun ity have been quite fortunate in having Mr. E. B. Fox working in our school for the past quarter as a student teacher. He has taken an active part in all school and com munity activities and done most successful classroom teaching. The faculty gave a covered dish supper for Mr. and Mrs. Fox at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Buch anan last Wednesday night. All of the faculty wives and husbands were invited. After the dinner Mrs. China Lavendar showed colored slides of her western trip last sum mer. The group also enjoyed cir culating through the new addition that the Buchanans made to their home last summer. The seventh grade class gave a surprise party for Mr. Fox on Fri day before he left. The boys and girls had formed committees which provided an abundance of refresh ments 'and most enjoyable games. Mr. Marsh was invited to the party. 4-H News The Green Valley 4-H Club met Nov. 2. We had some songs and then the minutes were read. After that Miss Holcomb talked to us about washing dishes. Mrs. Lavender's First Grade We had a wonderful time getting ready for and attending our Hallo ween carnival. Gerry Moretz was the king and Linda Lee Proffitt the queen from our room. We are very sorry to learn that David's father, Mr. John Hayes, is in the hospital. We are glad to welcome Roy Rogers (Buckcy) Wilson from the Winsten-Salem school into our room. , Delia Mae Cook, Sheron Norris and Judy Ann Johnson have cele brated their birthdays recently. Mrs. Wright's Grades Many of us have read twenty five booki this year. We think Johnny Jones is our best reader, and he makes one hundred on spelling every day. Dennis Hicks is absent because of sickness. This is the month of Thanksgiv ing, and we want to begin it by telling all these people how much we thank them for their patience and kindness to us. The ladies in the luchroom, Mr. South, Mr. Marsh, and our bus drivers, who all work hard to make us comfort able and happy. Mrs. Greene's Third Grade Our king and queen, Jerry South and Helen Zowadski won third places in the contest. Some of the boys, and girls in our room have been sick. On Friday afternoons we are working on some surprises for our mothers soon. We are enjoying the paper pup pets which each boy and girl made. Also some new charts and pictures in our room. Fifth Grade News Delmos Greene was crowned king of the Greene Valley Hallo ween Carnival, and Nancy Coffey had the next highest number of votes for queen. Each room was asked to fix a table or display for the country store. Our room received first prize in the grammar grade divi sion. The following boys and girls still have perfect attendance for the year: Earlene Jones, Joyce Wine barger, Dawn Bryan, Eula Jean Davis, Linda Carroll, Betty Idol, Jeannie Greene, Nancy Coffey, Dewey Culler, Jimmy Wilson, Del mos Greene, Jerry Winebarger, Grady Miller, and Joe Norris. Linda Carroll has a birthday on November 21. The fifth and sixth grades en joyed practicing and giving a cir cus program for the benefit of our classroom's king and queen. This same program will be presented at our P. T. A. meeting on Thursday night. Mrs. Buchanan's Seventh Grade We have been studying the Colonial people. We have chosen committees to make parts of a Colonial Colony. Silverstone I News Items Pfc. Odell Perry of Fort Jack son, S. C., is home on a 14-day leave with 'his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Blftnco Perry, at Zionville. Mr. Sam Wilson of Granite Falls visited with Mr. and Mrs. Ronda Greene Sunday. Mrs. Duval Perry and children of Granite Falls visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Blanco Perry. Mr, and Mrs. Robert McGuire and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harley of Bristol visited with Mrs. E. C. Greene Sunday. SN JimE Perry, USN, is spend ing a 14-day leave with Mr. and Mrs. Ronda Greene. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moody and Mrs. Roby Wilson visited recently with friends in Butler, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Normal! Reece of Cleveland, Ohio, spent last week end with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moody. Mrs. Stanley Cook of Cleveland. Ohio, spent last week end witty her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Davis. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Wilson and Mrs. Ronda Greene spent last week visiting with friends and relatives in Lynchburg, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson visited on Beaver Dam Sunday af ternoon. Mrs. Emory Greer of Zionville has been visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wilson. Miss Carolyn Greene spent Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Chy Fletch er and Miss Virginia Perry. Mrs. Lena Greer, who had her tonsils removed at the Watauga Hospital last week, is back at home and getting along fine. Mr. Tom Perry, who has been very sick, is able to be out again. Mrs. Henley Greer, who is real sick, is unimproved at this writing. Mr. Earl Earp of Vilas spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Clay Fletcher. Mountaineers Are Given Treat The Appalachian Mountaineers, champions of the North State Con ference, were treated to a "real" meal Friday night, November 5th, at Kirk's Restaurant. This meal was provided by local men of Boone and Watauga county and Earl Penick acted as chairman of the group. The menu consisted of fried chicken, corn, garden peas, gravy, slaw, hot rolls, butter, milk, coffee, and apple pie. The men responsible for. the meal were: J. D.
