The ceremony was performed December 26 at the home of the bride's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Sherwood of Vilas. They will reside in Norfolk, Virginia after a short wedding trip. Henry Gaither of Camp Chaffee, Arkansas spent a few days last week with his mother, Mrs. J. U. Gaither. Miss Betsy Graham, daughter of Mr. and Mr. W. R. Graham of Todd spent part of the holidays visiting in the home of Mrs. Lil lie Thomas in Zionville. Mr. and Mrs. Sylvanus Main of Cleveland, Ohio and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dale- and sons of Asheville spent the Christmas holidays with their mother, Mrs. Wilson Hollar. Mrs. Hale Vance has returned from a ten days' visit with her daughter, Mrs. James F. Malcolm and Mr. Malcolm, at Winston Salem. Hardin returned home Friday from a month's visit with Mr. and Mrs. Roger Matthews in Greensboro and Mr. and Mrs. W. F. McLeod in Reidsville. Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Greene and son, Dennis, of Eton College spent the Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lcc Greene, and family. Dr. and Mrs. Johnny Perry of Greensboro announce the birth of twin daughters on December 29 at Wesley Long Hospital in Greens boro. Mr. and Mrs. Frank F. Smith, Frank, Jr., Howard and Jane, have returned to Fayette, Ala., from a ten-day holiday visit with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Smith. Mr. George Hagaman, Mr. Edd Quails and Mrs. W. L. Henson left Tuesday morning for Roseland. Fla. Mrs. Henson will spend a few weeks with her nieces, Misses Hazel and Edna Holtsclaw. Two weeks ago Mrs. Minnie Watson joined her son. Dr. Hugh Watson and family in Greensboro for a tour*of Florida and a visit to Havana, Cuba. Mrs. Watson re turned home Saturday. . Mr. and Mrs. Norva Hagaman and daughteri, Nancy and Jane, of Norfolk, Va. were called here last Tuesday because of the death of Mr. Hagaman's grandmother, Mrs. Emma Shell. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hagaman and Mr. and llrs. Charles Lewis before return ing home on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Page of Christiansburg, Virginia and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Lavoi of Arling ton, Virginia were visitors a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Mast of Sherwood and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Taylor of Valle Crucis. Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Greene left for their home in Lewiston, Idaho, December 20, after spending nine days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Greene, and family of Boone Route 2. It was their first visit back home in four years and Mrs. Greene's first trip to North Car olina. Miss Ala Hodges and Miss Con nie Casey returned Saturday to the New England School of Theo logy in Brookline, Mass., after spending the holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Hod ges and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Casey. Their guests during the holidays were Miss Patsy Cassidy and Mr. Franz Manrich. The first U. S. rocket engine with thfottle has been developed. Messer-Rogers Engagement MISS JACKIE SUE MESSER Mr. and Mrs. Jack Messer of Waynesville have announced the engagement of their daughter, Jackie Sue, to Charles Cowles Rogers, Jr. of Wilkesboro, son of Mrs. Charles Cowles Rogers of Boone and the late Mr. Rogers. An early spring wedding is planned. The engagement was announc ed at an open house held New Year's Day with Mr. and Mrs. Mes ser and Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Woody as hosts in the home of the Woodys. Christmas decorations were us ed throughout the house with the exception of the dining room where the bridal motif was ob served. Assisting in receiving and serv ing were Miss Laura Woody, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Leatherwood, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Moody. The bride-elect was graduated from Agnes Scott College and now holds s position with the First Na tional Bank in Waynesville. Mr. Rogers was graduated from the University of North Carolina an<^erved in the U. S. Army. He now has a position as credit mana ger of the Northwestern Bank at Wilkesboro. Richard Chase Will Appear In Reading Richard Chase, the popular story-teller, folk-game leader, and ballad-singer from Beech Creek will give a reading of his own play, "Home To Canaan," Sunday evening, January B at 6:30 p. m. in the Methodist Church. The pub lic is cordially Invited to hear this performance which is being spon sored by the Wesley Fellowship (Methodist organization of college students.) ? The play, "Home to Canaan," is a Negro Folk play and Bible nar rative based on the Moses story, and is one and one-half hours long. Besides being a ballad singer, player of English flute, story-teller and collector of folk games, Mr. Chase has written: "Jack Tales," "The Wicked Giant and the Devil," "Grandfather Tales," "Jack and the Three Sillies," "The Complete Uncle Remus," and "Hullaballoo," which is a group of children's fav orite singing games. Wil liams and children, Ruth Ann, Howard, Jr. and Sarah, returned home Sunday after visiting ten days with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Williams in Winter Valley, Mis sissippi, and Mrs. D. A. Mrs. Cury recently gave birth to triplets, af ter having previously given birth to two sets of twins and another child.
