GORDON A. NASH . . . Honored At Concert ' \ • JAMES C. HARPER . . . Payf Tribute to Nash Gordon Nash Honored At Musical Program Gordon A Nash, head of the Muiic Department at Appalachian State Teacher* College, and found er of the Appalachian High School Band 20 year* ago, was honored Saturday night when the High School Band under direction of J. Perry Watson presented a Visual Music program. More than 400 people attended the concert in the Boone Elementary School audi torium at which time words of testimony to Mr. Nash's work with the band were heard. Special dancing and lighting ef fects added to the concert. Molly Agle did a dance, and the major ette* were featured in a "black out baton ballet" during the last number of the concert. In 1037 Mr. Nash started the high school band with 23 mem bers. Of this 23, nine were present for the testimonial concert. Others who are living away, some as far as California, sent telegrams to Mr. Nash. The 1937 band present ed Mr. Nash with a registration book listing all those present at Saturday night's program. The College Alumni Association, represented by R»y R. Blanton, a former bandmaster of the high school, presented Mr. Nash with a recording of the concert and all the testimonial speeches made Saturday night. The program included a march, "Thunder West" by Kenneth Far rell; "The Impresario Overture" by W. A. Mozart; the second move ment of "Symphony in C Minor" by Ernest Williams. Dr. W. H. Plemmons, president of the col lege, spoke on behalf of the fac ulty. Mary Lawrence, Pat Dowling and Margaret Hagaman formed a clar inet trio to play "Dancing Reedi" by S. D. Eisch. The band played an arrangement by Cheyette-Rob erts of "Londonderry Air,'' James C. Harper, or Lenoir, a past-president of the American Bandmasters Association, brought words from the bandmasters. W. A. Mozart's "Minuet" from the Symphony in G Minor was rendered by the following on their respective instruments: Patsy Hol lingswohh, oboe, Nancy Hollinga worth, flute, Betty Swaim, clarinet, Billy Williams, French horn, and John . Ralph Buchanan, *basson. Miss Agle presented her dance to the tune of "Singing the Blues" by Melvin Endsley. The band" play ed "Midnite Matinee" by Willis Schaefer. They are presently making their home with Mr. Johnson's parents, Mr. and Ho. Noah Johnson. Music Meeting • Pour of our teachers, Mrs. China Lavender, Mrs. Ruth Winkler, Mrs. Mary Ann Winkler and Mrs. Ralph Buchanan met with Mrs. Richard Hargrove of the musk faculty of Appalachian State Tea chers College Wednesday for the purpose of listening to suggested musical recordings in order to better choose for purchase in our school. The meeting was most suc cessful and the order for our rec ords was placed this week. This if another wonderful service that is provided by Appalachian State Teachers Colege for which we are most grateful. Lunchroom New* Mrs. Blaine Miller, who was sick this week, is back at work. We are glad that she is feeling better. Mrs. Ssm Moretz has been help ing this week during Mrs. Miller's illness, and due to the death of Mrs. Holman's brother. Mrs. Mor etx got a warm welcome, especial ly from the children who remem ber her from last year. P. T. A Meetings Mrs. Florence Greene's sixth grade will give the students pro nal band members in 1937, spoke on behalf of the students. John Hodges was featured as cornet soloist in "Stormy Weath er" as arranged by David Bennett. Harold Walters' "Sunset Solilo qyy" was given by the band, and the final number to which the majorettes added color was "Hail to the Blue and Gray" by Paul Yoder. Ushers were officers of the Junior Band. The stage crew was composed of Robert Love and Mrs. Patricia Honeycutt, and the stage manager was William Ross. gram for the P. T. A. Mn Winkler's Fifth Grade We have elected claaa officers for the last half of the school year. Our officers are: President, Glen da Wilson; Vice President, Bren ds Hennesaee; Secretary, Ksther ine Greer; Treasurer, Larry Car' roll; Devotional Chairman, Gary Brown; Song leaders, Glenda Wil son and Brends Hennesaee; Pro gram Committee, Elizabeth Miller, Sylvia Norria, and Joe Williams, and Reporter, Floyd Greene. We are so glad to have Freddie Church in our claaa. He came to us from Cove Creek Elementary School. One of our responsibilities for the year was to arrange a bulletin board in the lunch room. We have just completed a February Birth day Calendar using famous peo ple. Tommy Miller, Buddy Storie, Jerry South, Keith Miller, and Lucille Canter helped with the project Even though there has been some sickness, our attendance has been very good this year. Those receiving attendance certificates for the six weeks period were: Doris Trivette, Katherine Greer, Tommy Miller, Dean Trivette, Elizabeth Miller, Thurman Main, Johnny Moretz, Jimmy Proffit, Geneva Woodring, Daphne Tug man, Betty Shoemake, Joe Wil liams, Floyd Greene, and Kenneth Miller. Special recognition ahould be given to Kenneth Miller and Floyd Greene. Kenneth has had perfect attendance for four straight years, and Floyd for three years. Sixth Grade News We have elected our clsss of ficers for the second half of the year. They are as follows: Presi dent, Roland Jones; Vice Presi dent, Paul Bryan; Secretary, Ern est Lewis; Tressurer, Keith Nor ris; Reporter, Polly Ann Clswson; Song Leaders, Joyce Ragan and Jimmy Lookabill. There are four of us who have not missed a day this year. They are: Polly Ann Clawson, Ruth Ellen Moretz, Margaret Moretz, and Jimmy Honeycutt. We are planning a P. T. A. pro tnun for the fourteenth of Febru ary. We are gong to dedicate oar put of the program to the tea cher*. Seventh Grade New* We are proud to have twelve pupils who have perfect attend ance for the year. They are: Sam uel Bryan, Linda Carroll, Nancy Coffey, Allen Culler, Dewey Cul ler, Delmas Greene, Jeannie Greene, Lula Hicks, Betty Idol, Eieene Tritette, Nancy William*, and Joyce Winebarger. In our atudy of Latin Ameri ca we are glad to have Ernesto Cuevaa from Cardenas, Cuba with us, He has helped us in our pro nunciation of the Spanish Count ries. Also in connection with this study, we are painting large pic tures of places that we think we might see if we visited Latin America. We have especially liked the songs and rhythm studies from these countries. Allen Culler, Jimmy Wilson, and Dewey Culler are doing a fine job building a master time line on our American History. This will be mounted above our large bulletin board where it can be clearly seen and studied by all the pupils. Eighth Grade Our class officers for the last half of this school year are: Presi dent, Barbara Moretz; Vice Presi dent, Elaine Shoe make; Secre tary, Maxine Brown; Treasurer, Jerry Moretz, and Song Leader, Opal Johnson.
