M oters and Citizens, OFfjBOONE FROM jJAM " * w ■ The Democratic Candidates For Mayor and City Council We have been nominated by the Democratic Party to run for office again and we wish to make the following statements concernin g past actions of our party and to tell you of our future plans: We have tried to be saving with the taxpayers' money and yet, at the same time, be progressive by doing the many things we are called upon by you to do. » To begin with, we think our tax rate is reasonable. Our water and sewer charges are the lo west, or among the lowest, in the entire State. Many new water lines, including hydrants, h ave been built without floating bonds. These things have greatly reduced your insurance payments. Streets have been built without assessment to property owners; also greatly needed sidewalks and widening of some streets has been carried out. A great improvement was made in the appearance of the Town with purchase of new street lights and new street signs. The following property has been purchased: Lot adjoining City Hall for $1500.00, garbage dump property $3500.00, tobacco warehouse property $40,000.00. All of this is paid for except a balance due of $10,000.00 on tobacco warehouse property, which will be used for future parking facilities. Our indebtedness of $244,478.95 on June 30, 1943, has been reduced to $96,000.00 with other bills paid and a small balance as o f June 30, 1957. None of the $75,000.00 bond money has been spent yet. Financial support has been given to local Health Department and local Library and Band. The Recreation Program has been given financial support to be carried forward by some of our leading men and women. Our Fire Department has been equ ipped with needed supplies and is in best shape in its history. Much needed garbage and street equip ment has been paid for so that we could more efficiently serve your needs. The old garbage dump has been removed from your midst. A radio system has been installed so that you may call police, sheriff, or a patrolman on short notice. All qualified Town employees have been put under Social Security. The operation of the IRC plant was made possible because we provided them with water and sewer facilities, and we are now he! ping get these {acuities to the new plant to be occupied by Shadowline, Inc. The above is part of what we have been doing with your tax money, and details are available to any who want the figures. Recently a Bond Issue was approved to expand and improve our Water System. So far none of this has been spent, but we are in t he midst of plans to spend this money for much needed expansion of our system to me et the needs of a progressive and growing community. All plans are approved by compete nt engineers and the State Health Dept. We recently received petitions from every established club in our City asking that we purchase the Horn in the West property. We asked any person to advise us if they objected to this purchase, and after negligible objectio ns, it is our intention, if elected, to proceed with the purchase of said property. After careful figuring and consideration, we believe we can give you the same services as now given and carry out the above plans without raising your taxes, water and sewer rates. We owe $3350.00 balance on parking meters payable $100.00 per month, and if elected, we plan to continue to keep the parking m eters in operation which we think is the best and logical way to regulate the flow of traffic. Perhaps the most knotty and perplexing problem we have is the traffic and parking situation. This is certainly not confined to Boone alone but is a universal problem. If elected we plan to modernize our traffic light ing system and secure the services of a qualified traffic expert to help plan more efficient operation of our available street space. A committee from Merchants and Chamber of Commerce groups, and any other interested citizens will be asked to help us with these plans and make suggestions. _____ If returned to office we plan to put a modern fence around our City Cemetery and have it mowed and trimmed regularly. We think the operation of office, Police, Fire, Street, Water aud Garbage departments are operating efficiently and well—if you think so, vote for us^to continue in office. We want to thank all who have cooperated so splendidly in the past, as what has been done has been accomplished with your fine cooperation. Gordon H.
