The Defense Department has advised Congress that it could get along on fl42.24S.000 less than the Senate had voted it for this fiscal year. Joe Jordan of Wake Forest Col lege won the cross country and Paul Arrington of Presbyterian College wa« first in the broad jump. Thomas G. Hunt of Washington, D. C., sent his ringing note* over the meadow for first place honors in the bag piping competition. Poison Ivy, Oak Killer Is Named QUESTION: How can I kill poison ivy or poison oak in my yard? ANSWER: A new chemical called Amino Triazole has produc ed exceptionally good results in eliminating both poison ivy and oak—and it does the job in both sunlight and shade. This material should not be sprayed on plants you want to keep. It's very import ant that you follow the directions on the container when using the chemical. QUESTION: Are there any boll weevils in North Carolina that are, resistant to the recommended in secticides? ANSWER: As far as can be de termined there are no weevils in this state that have developed re sistance to any of the recommend ed insecticides. Other areas of the country have been plagued some what by weevils becoming resist ant to some poisons. Desserts Add Zest, Color To Meals DESSERTS. A DRAMATIC FINISH TO MEAL—Dwelt* are more than just a food. A number «t ready-to-use dessert foods are on the market For pretty, easy desserts, there are sponge cake sheila, lady fingers, pound cake, angel food cake, orange chiffon cake, and from the bakery or made yourself—meringue*. Frost ed white or yellow layer cake, al so, can be the basis for dessert*. Recipe for Meringues: 4 egg white* V* teaspoon salt y« teaspoon cream of tartar 1 cup sugar hi teaspoon vanilla Beat the 4jgg whites until frothy; sprinkle salt and cream of tartar over them. Continue beat ing until stiff but not dry. Gradu ally beat In sugar, adding vanilla with the last of the sugar. Shape by spoon or pastry bag in mounds on a baking sheet covered with unglazed paper. Bake In a slow oven (273 degrees F.) about 40 minutes or until very delicately browned and dry on the surface. Remove from the paper while warm. If difficult to remove, dip a spatula in water and remove. Meringues may be filled with ice cream, fresh or frozen fruit, or berries topped with whipped cream. For a glamour dessert, stir apricot ' nectar into vanilla pud ding to be spooned into sponge cake shells and topped with apri cots, strawberries or other fruits, and the whole topped with whip ped cream or a fluff or meringue to be lightly browned in the oven. NEW BOND FORM Beginning in October, the U. S. Treasury will begin issuing "E" bonds in punch-card form.
