August 24, in a double-ring
ceremony at the First Methodist
Church in Boone.
Hr. Auten is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank B. Auten of Belmont.
The Rev. Everett H. Lowman,
assisted by the Rev. George F.
Houck of Concord, uncle of the
bride, officiated.
Wedding music was provided by
Mrs. James Eugene Wilson, Jr.,
soloist, and Mrs. Robert E. Agle,
organist.
Mr. Auten was his son's best
man. Ushers were Dean Auten

The bride, given in marriage by
her father, wore a gown of candlelight
Italian satin styled with a
portrait neckline and brief sleeves.
The princess skirt extended into
a cathedral train. She wore a mantilla
veil of chantilly lace, and
carried a white satin-covered Bible
topped with a purple orchid.
Miss Joanne Aldridge of Boone
and Chapel Hill was the maid of
honor. She wore a sheath lilac
dress of pure silk peau de sole,
styled with a square neckline and
a full panel back. Her headpiece
was a curled leaf bandeau in lilac
with a flirtation veil. She carried
a pink and lilac nosegay with lUac
streamers.

Immediately before dinner the
hostesses presented the honoree
with a gift in her ailver pattern.
A pint: and silver color scheme
was carried out in the decorations
and food. A large silver candlebrum
from which extended silver
ribbon, holding pink and silver
wedding bells formed the centerpiece.
Smaller candlebra at either
end of the table were surrounded
by wreaths of pink carnations,
ferns, and baby's breath. Each
guest's place was marked with a
place card on which were silver
bells held by pink ribbon.
In addition to the hostesses and
honoree. twelve guests were present.

Club Has Meet
The general meeting of the
Worthwhile Woman'a Club was
held Thursday evening, August 22,
at 7:30 o'clock, in the home of
Mrs. W. R Winkler. Associate
hostesses were Mrs. R. W. Watkins,
Mrs. R. 8. Bushnell, Mrs. Ed
Hall, Mrs. Denis Craven and Mrs.
Guy Goodman.
Mrs. Verna Wilcox, president of
the club, presided and also gave
some of the highlights of the
President's Institute which was
held on Thursday in Hickory.
Mrs. W. C. Greer, program chairman,
introduced the Rev. L. H.
Hollingsworth, who gave a very
interesting and informative talk
on "Religions of the World." He
discussed briefly six of the most
outstanding religions in the world
today, namely, Hinduism, Buddhism,
Confucianism, islamism, Judaism
and Christianity. In closing,
Mr. Hollingsworth pointed out that
although on the surface all these
strange, mystic religions seem to
have great similarity to our own
Christian belief, there is one great
basic difference — Christianity is
strictly a personal religion, never
a philosophical abstract.
Mrs. Albert L. Isaac of Miami,
Fla., and Mrs. John Wethered of
Orlando, Fla., were welcomed into
the club as summer members. Mrs.
Clarence Angell, sister of Mrs.
W. R. Winkler, and Mrs. L. H.
Hollingsworth were recognized as
guests.
Refreshments of lime punch and
cake were served to the 30 members
and guests.

Mrs. Farthing is the daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Louis
Glenn of lower Valle Crucis.
Mr. Farthing is the eldest son
of the late Mr. and Mrs. William
Judson Farthing, also of Valle
Crucis.
Mr. and Mrs. Farthing are making
their home at Matney and
Valle Crucis. They plan to spend
the winter at their home at Carolina
Colony, Winter Beach, FU.
The House has approved postal
rate increases, including a fourcent
rate for first-class letters
and a seven-cent alrmal rate. But
it seemed unlikely the Senate
would give the bill any attention
