The director of our Saturday
Folk Feetivala, Richard Ctw~», ha»
endeavored now for three year*
to bring singers who know William
Walker's hymn books to the
festival platform. Let us hope that
the summer of 1058 will see this
Idea become a fact.
Man has always worshipped with
music, in the church, home, school,
and community. Our folk festivals
here in Boone are a fulfillment of
the need for good recreation
through songs, games, story-telling,
and plays—a wholesome exercise
of the body, mind, and spirit.
In the field of recreational
"folklore" Richard Chase has dedicated
his life to the living uses of
our heritage of such genuine culture.
He is an internationally
known singer, folk game leader,
teller of tales, and author.
This fall Mr. Chase has been
called to California where he will
tell our mountain tales and sing
our "Old Tales" and lead country
dances for teachers. On his way
West he will appear in Chicago
and on October 4 he will be in
Upper Iowa University at the call
of Eugene Garbee, formerly of Appalachian
State Teachers College.
Let us hope that 1938 will bring
forth such a development In our
living uses of folk games, folk
songs, and folk hymns, that Boone
will, as has been often said, make
great progress in becoming nationally
known as a place where
"the genuine folk ways of the
Anglo-Saxon heritage" may be
heard, seen, and enjoyed by more
and more of our local citixens and
our summer visitors.

In an economy drive aimed at
making a tax cut possible next
year, the Eisenhower Administration
is whacking away at the Federal
payroll and far-flung Government
programs. Government
agencies are under orders not to
fill any vacanices caused by death,
retirement or resignation without
specific and prior approval. They
have also been told to cut spending
by as much as a billion dollars
below the $71,800,000,000
proposed by this year by President
Eisenhower.
