Fair Premium
List Is Mailed
The new premium list of the
North Carolina State Fair which
goes into the maiU today carries
offer* of more than 180,000 in
eaah award* to prospective exhibitors
at the 1M7 exposition which
will be held in Kaleigh October
IS through It. Demand for the
list to the greatest ever, according
to Dr. J. S. Dorton. manager,
who states that more than five
and one-half tons of paper were
required to print this year's edition
of 10,500 copies.
Copies are being sent to all exhibitors
on the regular mailing
list, to all county home and farm
agents, and many agriculture and
home economics teachers, who
help with the preparation of exhibits
from individuals and county
units snd dubs.
The newest department of the
Fair will be the expanded "Village
of Yesteryear", which displays
many of the "old timely" tools,
crafts and machines of the years
gone by. This year, handicrafts
have been moved to this department.
Such interesting exhibits as
the displays of pottery, copper and
silver items, rugs and other woven
products of the handlooms, that
represent the home shop crafts of
sntebellum times will come into
their own. Craftsmen and women
will work at their benches
throughout fairweek, and their

Furney Todd, plant pathology
specialist for the N. C. Agricultural
Extension Service at State College,
say> reduction tat damage
didn't just happen, but is the result
of hard work by many different
groups. The agricultural researcher
had to find what crop* to
use in rotation programs, the kind
of soil fumigants to use and how
to apply them, and the advantage
of certain foil cultural practices
for nematode control County farm
agents and others demonstrated
these practices to tobacco growers.
And farmers had to put all of
these practices to work on their
farms
Todd says controlling nematodes
is a hard and constant fight
Crop rotation and soil fumigation
are two important steps in
controlling nelnatodee. However,
Todd points out that fall cultural
practices, like plowing out the
stubble, are equally important
Todd says nematode populations
can be reduced by 70 per cent
simply by plowing up the tobacco
stubble immediately after harvest.
To do the job, Todd suggests
that fanners first cut the tobacco
stalks thoroughly. Then with a
handiwork will literally come into
being before your eyes.
