Tom. Mr. Cornette ha* been in
Germany on a Fulbright Foundation
Award, which make* it possible
for professors of German to
viait and (tudy in Germany. Mr.
Cornette returned on Friday from
hi* rammer abroad, having ipent
the firrt four week* in a imall
German town and the la*t half of
he period (tudying at the Goethe
rnatiute in Munich. Hi* arrival in
ime for the birthday celebration

"ornette* will return the firit of
he week to Sherman, where Mr.

College.

Mr*. Downum, who ha* made her
home in Lenoir for the pait fifty
year*, wa* born in Davie county
near Mocluville at the home of
her maternal grandparent*, Mr.
and Mr*. Thoma* Brown. Her parent*
were Mr. and Mr*. J. A. Kimbrough.
She wa* one of two children.
Her *i*ter, Mr*. C. F. Maroney,
lived in Mocluville and
died three year* ago, to be followed
in death two day* later by
her huiband.

The Dowauai* moved to Lenoir
in 1906 and lived firit in a house
owaed by M. M. Courtney It waa
located on the corner acroaa from
the poatoffiee. Their aext home
waa ooe owaed by Miss Ella Tuttle
and waa acroaa from the old J. L.
Nelaon home. Later they moved
ia the Eallew home oa the corner
oppoaite the preaent City Market.
la 1909 they purchased the home
where Mra. Dowaum Uvea today.
At that time the streets were unpaved
and across from their home
was the J. A. Allen home which ia
still standing, aad nearby waa the
blacksmith a hop run by Mr. Allen.
The Rev. aad Mra. Dowaum had
two daughters, Minnie, who became
Mrs. Arthur Foard, aad Sadie, who
married C. P. Postell aad nude
her home in Birmingham, Ala.
Both were exceptionally talented
—Mrs. Foard ia music aad Mrs.
Postelle la art. Both are bow deceaaed.
Active and interested in her
family home, and neighbora, Mrs.
Downum radiatea a youthful inward
apark. Last week she entertained
at a small informal tea
honoring her granddaughter, Mrs.
Coraette. For a number of years
she has kept roomers, whom she
frequently treats to some of her
delicious cooking. African violets
are her hobby and her garden reflects
her interest in flowers from
early spring until late fall.
She has five grandchildren and
nine great grandchildren.
Dance Studio
To Be Opened
Nancy F. Cook will open her
dance studio for its sixth season
in Boone with a registration day
on Monday, September •. Classes
for children will include ballet,
tap, and acrobatics, and there will
also be adult ballroom classes. Ob
Monday students may come to the
studio on West King 8treet or
they may register by telephone at
Mrs. Cook's residence.
This season, in addition to her
Boone classes, Mrs. Cook will
teach one sfternoon each week in
Hickory as associate teacher in
Louis Nunnery's studio. Mrs. Cook
requests that Boone students register
promptly to be sure of a
place in class, as her time will be
limited in Boone this year and
there has already been considerable
advance registration from
children in nearby towns.
Any students wishing to sell
dance supplies should bring them
to the studio plainly marked with
the owner's name.
The highest egg money states
are those that produce more than
they eat In the state.

room. The newly decorated room
of the houee, with appropriate and
artiatie floral arrangement*, were
open to the gue*t* who (pent
much time examining and admiring
the lovely color schemes and
elegant appointment*.
In the dining room where •
beautiful gold and white motif
predominated Mrs. Richard Kelley
received. Dainty saadwlehes,
sweets and ants were served from
a beautifully appointed tea table
presided over by the dub president,
Mrs. Hooper Hendrix
Guests mingled in the dea, the
living room, oa the porch, and la
the garden. Everywhere "over-th*tea-cup"
visiting was the pattern
of entertainment.
Besides nineteen members, the
following guests were present:
Miss Katie Harris, Mrs. Richard
Kelley. Mrs. Carlos DeLima, aad
Misa Bunny Isaacs of Booac, aad
Mrs. Grady Pritchard of Chapel
Hill.

Glade Valley
Mr*. Mel law Richardson, of
Boone, wis elected secretary of
the alumni at the annual homecoming
of the Glade Valley School,
which was held in the dining room
of the Reynolds building Saturday
night, August 24, at eight o'clock.
Lawren Bowden of the class of
1932 presided.
The meeting, usually held on the
second Saturday in August, was
postponed this year due to a conflict
It was decided to resume
meeting on the second Saturday in
August in the future.
There were 110 places set for
guests. An added attraction this
year was the presence of former
and current teachers of the school.
They included Miss Cornelia McLaurin,
Mrs. Ellen A. Guerrant,
Dr. J. Harold Ostwalt, the Reverend
C. W. Ervin, Mrs. Frances
Mashbum Johnson, Edward C.
Johnson. Miss Ann Corry, and Mrs.
Emogene Choate Porter.
The program included two violin
numbers played by Mr. Johnson
and accompanied by Mrs. Ted
Porter. Dr. Ostwalt spoke on Glade
Valley as a school of commendation
and of challenge.
The dining room waa beautifully
decorated using the color scheme,
yellow and white, in order td carry
out the school colors. Miss Clarice
Thompson and Miss Ethel Moxley
were responsible for the artistic
arrangement.
The following oficers were elected:
Howard Lyon, High Point,
president; Dean Edwards, Sparta,
vice-president; Mrs. Melissa Crouse
Richardson, Boone, secretarytreasurer.
The women of the Cox's Chapel
community served the meal.
An agreement was recently
signed in Malaya ending British
rule in the Federal States and
admitting them to the Commonweath
as an independent -nation.
