Local Bus Drivers ; Win Roadeo Honors Watauga county adtool bua driv en took the two top place* { in the seven-coanty district school bus driver roadeo held at Ap palachian Demonstration school playground Saturday morning. Louise Ward, daughter of Mr. and lira. Lee Ward of Rominger, was winner in the girls' division. She attenda Cove Creak High School. Howard Len Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Warren, of Beaver Dam, took the first place position in the boys' division. He attends Bethel School. There were three girl* and 23 boys competing from the counties of Ashe, Burke. Caldwell, .Mit chell, McDowell, Avery and Wata uga. They were competing for a 9100 scholarship to college, and the chance -to represent the district in the state contest June 16-17 at Chapel Hill, where scholarship* of $500 and 9200 will be the prize for first and second place winners. Judging the contest Saturday were State Highway Jatrolmen Charles Mason of Boone, Charles Ratliff of Spruce Pine, and Ken neth Wilson of Lenoir; and Sgt. Ronda Hagaman, of the Lenoir police department, license examin ers Ralph Ctansberry and Albert Henson. Supervising the roadeo were C. E. Jones of Lenoir, Jo Bennle of Asherille, David Hatcher of Mount Airy, and Joe W*re of North Wilkesboro, all of the driver edu cation division of tbe Department of Motor Vehicle!. Farthing Riles Tuesday Harry (Bud) Farthing, 74, of Butler, died at the home of a aon, Shaw Farthing, at Butler, Satur day, following an illness of three weeks. He was a native of Watauga County. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Mtn. View Baptist Church. Survivors Include two ions, Shaw Farthing of Butler, and Boyd Farthing of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Dugger of Gainesville, Fla. Two brother*, Rev. E. J. Farthing and Bert Farthing of Sugar Grove. Six grandchildren and five great grandchildren survive. Funeral services were conduct ed from the Mtn. View Baptist Church at 3:00 p. m. First Folk Festival Will Be Held At Horn Area Saturday The first pre season Folk Festi val will be held Saturday at the festival platform Dear the Horn in the West Theater. Events will start at 3 o'clock with singing games, ?ongs, and Boone Home To Be Rebuilt Lexington ? "Daniel Boone's First Home in the South" will soon be restored by the Boone Memorial Association, it waa an nounced here Tuesday by Dr. Wade Sowers, president. Tom Shoaf of the Boone section, a skilled workman and familiar with the type of log buildings built by Boone, will have charge of the restoration. Logs to be used come from the Clayton Myers' old .barn, more than a hundred years old but in excellent condition. Dr. Sowers and Wayne H. Shoaf, i a Davidson County commissioner, 1 will supervise the bulldtng at Boone Memorial Park, located oh the Yadkin River in Davidson County. The area has been donat ed to the county by the Sowers Estate. Last year the area was recon ditioned for use by the public and now the restoration of the Boone cabin that was one located on the tract is scheduled. tales for children. The sword dance team, made up of boys from Cove Creek, Beech Creek, and Boone, will bring Old Father Barleycorn out to be be headed about 4:00 p. m. The Fool, The Doctor, and Old Dirty Bet, will attend. This dance Ja, with its attendant Humming Play, one of the most deep-rooted traditions in the Western World. It's revival in Boone this summer will be fol lowed with interest. These festivals are open to the public at no admiasion charge. They are sponsored by Tba South ern Appalachian Historical As sociation along with the Horn in the West. This summer will be the fourth annual series of folk programs presented for participa ion and enjoyment for our local folks and for our summer visitor*. Hud ion of Miami, who have been op erating Mystery Hill for the paat several weeks on Sundays only, announce that the unique attrac tion between Boone and Blowing Rock is now open every day for the summer. Mr. Hudson, who promises fun for all at the spot where "the law of gravity has been repealed", re ports that many visitors have stopped by on Sundays this sea son.
