PI Gamma Mu Bestows Honor On Dr. Van Noppen Dr. Ins Vsn Noppen has been selected as the winner of the Certificate of Excellence in the first annual award to the person "contributing most to the field of Social Science. The award, given by Appalachian's Epsilon Chap ter of Pi Gamma Mu, goes to Dr. Van Noppen for her recently publiahed "The South: A Docu mentary History." Salisbury if the first Southern Bell exchange In North Carolina, | and one of the first cities in the Sooth, to get the new service. : Telephone users there will be able to dial direct, without the aid of a long distance operator, mil lions of telephones throughout North Carolina, across the nation, and to points in Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii, almost as ?uily as they call their next door neighbor. The new telephone system is known as Direct Distance Dialing. <4 DDD. Through the use of com plex telephone switching equip ment and automatic accounting machines, DDD automatically routes the call to the proper tele phone, times the call electronic ally, and records other necessary information. The DDD equipment can handle hundreds of long distance calls simultaneously. Telephone operators will con tinue to handle all long distance calls other than station-to-station calls. Direct Distance Dialing was de veloped to help carry the steadily increasing volume of long distance calls. Last year( alone, the Bell Telephone . System handled about three billion long distance calla. DDD, after much research by Bell Telephone Laboratories, was first put into service in Engle wood, N. J., in 1991 on an experi mental basis. It proved to be highly populsr with the public, and has since been put into ser vice in a number of cities through out the nation.
