Junior Garden Club Wins Awards The Blue Bonnet Junior Garden Club of Boone, sponsored by the Blue Ridge Garden Club, received a number of awards from the Garden Club, of North Carolina, Inc. at the annual convention held in Asheville at the Grove Park Inn. At the breakfast honoring jun iors, Wednesday, April 27, Mrs. Ralph Thompson, State Junior Chairman, announced awards given to members of the Junior Garden Club of North Carolina. A veteran of World War II, Doughton served in the Navy Sea bees, and was in charge of harbor surveys, airports and general main tenance work for the base at Pal ermo, Sicily, and was assistant to the public works officers at Oran, Algeria. He is a member of the official board of the First Methodist Church of North' Wilkesboro. His wife is the former Grady Sue Spicer and they have one daugh ter. Succeeding Doughton as Assist ant Division Engineer is Howard E. Koontz, District Engineer kl charge of Alleghany, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin Counties. Koontz is a veteran of more than 23 years with the Department, having begun his highway career in 1934 as a truck driver with the Road Oil Department. In addition to these ribbons the club received a junior honor roll certificate and a junior achieve ment award for outstanding ac complishments. This is a record of which these girls and Boone can be proud. This Junior Garden Club has been or ganised just one year and has been very active in its program, un der the leadership of its chair man, Mrs. G. D. Barnett. The jun ior counselor from the Blue Ridge Garden Club i* Mrs. E. S. Quails'. Engineer. A native of Winston - Salem, Koontz was educated at Welcome High School, Guilford College and Appalachian State Teachers Col lege. He is a member of the First Methodist Church in Elkin and is a director of the Elkin Lions Club. He is married to the former Mil dred Hill and they have one son. Resident Engineer Ralph M. Bradshaw is stepping into the post of District Engineer replacing Koontz, with headquarters at Elkin. A native of Caldwell County, he joined the Highway Department following hit discharge from ser vice in IMS. He has served as rod man, instrumentman, and Resident Engineer on construction in Surry, Yadkin and Wilkes Counties. He is an active member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church and also holds membership in the Elkin Lions Club and the State Highway and Prison Employees Association. He is married to the former Margaret Justice and they have two sons. SUMMER SCHOOL (continued from page one) achool students la science, both sponsored by tlM National Science Foundation. The high achool and elementary school (both lab oratory schools) offer work dur ing the summer months. The meeting was called to order by the president. Mrs. Juanita Wil son gave the devotion, and Mrs. Ivalee Dancey led the prayer. The club colect was repeated by all. The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. Plans were made for some of the club members to attend the District Meeting in Spruce Pine next Thursday, and also the' re flnlahlng of furniture in May.
