received here from State Head

letter from the Legion State Ad
jutant, Nash McKee, expressing
congratulations and thanks to the
membership chairman, all post of
ficers, and membership workers
for their effort.
S. Marvin Burton, of Charlotte,
N. C. Department Commander of
The American Legion, issued a
statement of high praise for the
local Post. *
Commander Burton said, "I am
proud to congratuate the officers
and members of Post 236 upon this
notable achievement. All of the
programs and services of the Leg
ion are \nade possible through
dues paid for membership and
we appreciate the great part play
ed by Post No. 256 of Blowing
Rock. Sincere thanks to every
member of the Post who had a
part in the membership work."
The Incentive Goal of Post 2S6
is 94 and the membership for
1961 to date is 96. Incentive Goals
are assigned each American Leg
ion Post by the State Headquart
ers^ and are based on last year's
membership of the Post plus 2
per cent.
"We do not intend to stop our
membership drive now that we
have reached our Incentive Goal,"
Post Commander Sudderth said.
"There are many more eligible
veterans who have not yet joined
our Post and we invite them all to
become members."

Election of officers for the com
ing year will be held by the Wa
tauga Young Democrats Club when
it meets Friday night, it was an
nounced by J. B. Clawson, Jr?
president. The meeting will be In
the Courtroom at the Courthouse,
and begins at 7:30 o'clock.
/ Besides the election of officers
discussion will be held on the local
and state legislation that is now
up before the Legislature at Ra
leigh, Mr. Clawson said.

Girl Scouts Climax Week
With Covered Dish Supper
The Girl Scout* of Boone cli
maxed the celebration of Girl
Sccut Week Friday with a covered
dish supper for their parents and
friends. Held ifi the Boone Ele
mentary SchodT cafeteria, tilfe event
was attended by nearly 200 per
sons. The supper also celebrated
the 49th anniversary of Girl Scout
ing in America.
There are 74 registered Brownies
and Girl Scouts in Boone, divided
into three troops of Brownies and
two troops of Scouts. Each unit
presented a skit, a play or some
activity for the entertainment of
their guests, and an impressive
Flag ceremony closed the night's
program.
Special guests, besides the par
ents and families, included John
Howell, principal of the school,
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Petrey, Mrs.
Wiley Smith, and Mrs. H. M.
Cooke, a former leader, and the
Rev. J. K. Parker, Jr.
Other activities during the spec
ial week included recognition of
the Girl Scouts at their respective
churches on Sunday, March 12,
and being guests of Appalachian
Theatre for a movie.

High Point Orchestra To Perform At Appalachian College
The High Point Senior High
School Orchestra will present ?
concert in the Fine Arti Building
Auditorium Friday evening, March
24 at 8:00 p. m.
The 46 piece orchestra will be
under the direction of E. Barry
Ruth.
This orchestra has been one ol
the mot. I outstanding high school
orchestras in the state for a num
ber of years. In the past it has
been under the direction of its
founder, Miss Virginia Frank, and
later Mr. Fritz van de Steur. Mr.
Ruth, the present director is a
graduate of Appalachian and holds
B.S. and M.A. degrees from the
institution. He was a member of
the ASTC orchestra while in
school here.
The program will include: "Im
