Dog Fanciers
Like 4-H Clubs
You don't need a "south-40" to
get going in a brand-new 4-H Club
project offered from coast to
coast All you noed is a dog and a
desire to give him the best care
possible, and to improve and "edu
cate" him.
The new project is the 4-H dog
care and training awards program.
Awards will go to members who
do the most outstanding job in
the state and county. They consist
of attractive gold-filled medals for
four members in each county, and
a handsome, inscribed 19-Jewel
wrist watch for the state winner.
For the last two years the pro
gram has been operating on a pilot
basis. It was developed jointly by
the Cooperative Extension Ser
vice, the Rflston Purina Company,
and the National 4-H Service Com
mittee. The outcome was so satis
factory that the sponsors decided
to launch the program on a nation
al scale. The project proved to be
ideally suited for the city and
suburban 4-H'er, although many
farm youths also participated.
Six major reports are required
from 4-H'ers enrolled in the pro
gram. They are records relating
to the dog's breed, pedigree and
showing; feed and labor costs in
cluding time spent on grooming
and exercising the animal. Also
requested are reports of expenses
incurred for veterinarian services,
income received from sale of pup
pies, caring for other dogs, prize
money, and results of special
training.
Last, but not least, the young
dog fanciers summarize participa
tion in 4-H Club meetings, other
projects, fairs, school and com
munity events. Awards, as well as
educational literature, are pro
vided by Ralston Purina.
