S Beta Club Members Hear Report State Meet App.iwht.il Hi|h School Bet* Club member* beard * report from the members w ho attended the atate Beta Club convention in AifeevUie Discussing the conven tion program and activities were Edward Brown, Robert Cook, Wil liam Hi*h, David Dougherty, and Andy Stalling*. After this discus sion the member* were divided in to group*. Each group was assign ed a subject and given a few min utes to prepen a three minute talk on that subject One member from each group was selected to deliver the speech. The president urged all mem ber* to support the talent show scheduled for May 12. The pur pose of this show is to rsise money for the school to purchase sup plies and equipment under the Na tional Defense Education Act. Stu dents in Appalachian Elementary School grades 3-8 and in Appala chian High School are eligible to compete for the many prizes to be given. Win Cattle Judging Contest The annual Parkway Federation dairy and livestock Judging con test was held in Wstauga County on Saturday, April IS. Seven of eight schools in the federation were represented, with about sixty FFA members competing. The Daniel Boone Chapter, the local chapter of Appalachian High School, won first place in both dairy and livestock judging. The dairy judging team was made up of the following students: David Critcher, Buddy Carroll, Hack Critcher, and Wayne Graybeal. Jim Greene was an alternate. David Critcher made the highest score. The livestock judging team had the following boys on the first team: Craig Hollars, Billy Greene, Wayne Teague, and Jimmy Jor dan. John Critcher and Walter Lewis were slteraatea. Craig Hol lars was high scorer. The same boys will judge in the district contest to be held in Ashe ville, Msy 13. The winners in the district will go to Raleigh for the state contest the latter part of June. Honor Society Meets The National Honor Society met James Pennell Dies Sunday Mr. James M. Pennell died at the Veterans' Administration Hos pital In Salisbury Sunday, April 9. He was a resident of Clevelsnd, N. C., brother of the lste Mrs. Ed G. Farthing of Boone. Those attending the funerul from Boone were: Mr. Ed G. Farthing, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Farthing, and Mrs. Elmer G. Mil ler. Mrs. Myron Wright of Lorton, Virginia also attended the funer al. Experience I? Air Force Nepd " There's no substitute for ex perience," says local Air For;* Recruiting Sergeant Jame* E. Brand. That's why the Air Force needs all the experienced former military personnel it can get ? both men and women." The sergeant naturally pointed out that the experience must be in some field that the Air Force can use but, right now, requirements exist for former military person-1 Ml in over 100 different career fields. In addition, former mili tary personnel who can qualify for re-trsining into a needed Air Force skill can enlist for direct assign ment to a technical school. Those prior service personnel who do not require re-training, will be enlisted for immediate as signment direct to the base of their choice. In many cases, enlistment will be in the same rank held at time of discharge. Previous service in any branch of the United States armed forces count* for both retirement and longevity pay purpoaea with the Air Force and full credit for basic training la given in all caaea. No Air Force basic training refresher course of any kind will be re quired. Detailed information on the new Air Force Prior Service Program is available from Sgt. Brand at the U. S. Air Force Recruiting off ice, Post Office Building, Boone, each Wednesday afternoon from one to three o'clock.
