Bertlnen of the western sectors staged rallies and parages of the Kstt German dead. Adenauer told t? world la a speech to parliament in Bonn that the fleeing 3,000,000 Bast Germans to the West rince the communists took over proves that the people despise the com munist system. And fce and other German speak ers Charged that the reason Khrushchev and the communists want to get allied soldiers out of Berlin is becauae Berlin is a show place of democracy, a constant thorn in the side of communism and a place whore Germans ran see the difference between East and West. But while the Germans stand firm against thfe threats, President Kennedy has remained strangely quiet and Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield even csme up wtth a proposal to make Berlin a free city ? which included the conces sion, It seems, of withdrawing our troops from West Berlin. This speech ? which Mansfield claimed was his own initiative and philosophy ? dismayed some Germans for they saw in it the first sign of giving in to Khrush chev's bullying and threatening tactics. And there were many who felt that Mansfield's speech was large ly a trial balloon ? urged by Presi dent Kennedy and this adminulra 2 ta( of U S troop* out of Berlin If this happen*, Berlin will be ?t the mercy of ihe comnahists * will also be a shattering Mow to Wert Germans whose confidence in United States firmness and strength and dependability will be rudely shaken. OM Chancellor Adeaauer told the Russians bluntly ? in his Unifi cation Day speech? that If they wanted to lessen tension in the world they should agree to ? free elect ion in all Germany, and that if Khrushchev would do this, he would give guarantees of non aggression to Russia. There are many in Washington who think that Kennedy is missing the b?dl by studying Khrushchev's demanda, thinking along defensive lines. They think Kennedy should be pushing hard far free elections in all Germany, democratic free elections, which this country should continue to champion and propose. And they believe we should never give an inch to Khrushchev's bully ing oa Berlin.
