Greene and daughter, Jane Bland, have left Boone for Los Angelei, Calif., where they will fly to Seoul, Korea, Sept. 2, for their first 5-year term a* Baptist miaaionarie*. They were appointed in June by the Foreign Mission Board to serve at Seoul as missionaries to college students. They will be in language school for a year after their arrival In Korea. Mr. Greene has served as Bapt ist Student Union director at First Baptist Church In Boone for sev eral years. He la a native of Bun combe county. State Missions is ministering to the Japanese-related wives of ser vice men at military baaes such as Cherry Point, Jackaonville and Fort Bragg. It Is telling the story of Jesus by means of sign language to the deaf of the State. It is giving preachers of western North Carolina a chance to go to school at Fruitland Bible Institute at Hendersooville even though many are forty to fifty years of age. It is teaching adulta to read in order that they may teach oth ers in their community to read al ao, thus making the Bible an open book -in every life. It ia giving birth to new Seminary Centers in Western North Carolina for the purpose of training lay church leadership. State Missions is reaching more than 200,000 church members in Schools of Missions with graphic pictures of mission work around the world. It is the missionary arm of the churches reaching out through Vacation Bible Schools in needy areas of the state, such as military bases, trailer courts and isolated mountain areas. THE NAVT FLEET The Navy intends to add 42 ships ? Including a new attack carrier? to its operating fleet by next sum mer. The build-up reflects an effort by the service to increase readiness for conventional warfare and goes hand-in-hand with plans for an in crease in Navy personnel. The Navy will build up by three methods: (1) It will retain in ser vice ships that otherwise would be decommissioned because of age; (2) it will bring others out of mothballs; (3) it will add new ships to be delivered during the year. Adams, Volunteer Savings Bonds Chairman for Wa tauga County, calls attention to a recent change In Treasury regula tions permitting owners of these maturing 11 Bonds to continue holding them for an additional 10 years at a higher rate of interest ? a straight 3 3-4 per cent annually. Mr. Adams pointed out that these H Bonds were originally is sued to psy an average of 3 per cent annually for the nine-year, eight-month life of the bond. "In 1999, this rste was increased so ss to bring the final yields to maturity up to a range of 3.12 per cent to 3.36 per cent. Under new regulations, these particular bonds, the first of which matures in Feb ruary 1962, will return in semi annual interest checks, a straight 3 3-4 per cent interest during the extension period."
