Consequent ly, the building site for a new manse was selected by a site com mittee during the pastorate of the former minister, Dr. Walter Keys, and tte location, a block west of | the church building, on Wallingford Street, was picked. The lot was given by Mrs. Joseph F. Cannon, ? faithful and dedicated member of the church, and con struction began in the fall of 1900, during the pastorate of Rev. Blake Brinkerhoff. The original estimated cost of construction was $17,000, but the stewardship of time and talent by so many members and friends of the church who are competent electricians, plumbers, and carpen ters, reduces the cost to $13,000. Due to the generosity of summer friends, members, and visitors, over $10,000 of this amount has been received. The new manse is 54 feet long and 32-feet wide, with a floor space of approximately 18,600 square feet. It is heated by oil, *nd consists of an unfinished up stairs, and a downstairs area con sisting of three bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen, dining room, and living room. The exterior is finish ed with feathered weatherboarding, like so many in Blowing Rock. ADDING TO THE ARMY The Army has embarked on a program that could add as many as 190,000 men to its present strength by next summer. Secretary of the Army Elvis J. Stahr, Jr., said at a recent news conference that the extent of mobi lization will be governed, to some degree, by what happens in the Berlin crisis and elsewhere. Stahr said the Army expects to reach an authorized total by June 30, 1962, of 1,008,000. Both parties voice optimism on '62 Senate race. C. BLOWING ROCK NURSES' HOME Blowing Rock Nurses Home Dedicated Sun. By DR. H. E. SPENCE A unique and impressive cere mony took place at the nurses home, adjacent to the Blowing Rock Hospital, Sunday afternoon when the home waa dedicated. The ceremony waa unique in that, so far as is known, this is the first nurses home to be dedicated tn the state. A wide-spread and care ful search was made for a ritual for. the special occasion, but none was located. Those in charge had to write an original ritual. Mr. C. S. Kipp of Charlotte, Chairman of the Hospital Board, was in charge of the ceremonies. His opening remarks follow: The event for which we are gath ered this afternoon is to dedicate this beautiful new building as a. residence for the nurses of the Blowing Rock Hospital. This building is made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Fredcrica Phair. Her keen awareness of the need for such a building and her sub stantial gift make this possible. For yeari the hoapital baa been Laboring under h'levere handicap in not having adequate or con venient quart?n for the nuraing staff. Mn. Phair realized the shortcoming! and by her gift en abled the undertaking of the con struction of the building about to be dedicated. Our greatest thanks go to Mrs. Phail for her generos ity. I might also add a word of appreciation to the Duke Endow ment, the. Ladies Auxiliary, Dr. Charles Davant and others who helped with the financing of this building. The Broyhill Furniture Company of Lenoir also generous ly furnished the building with ap propriate and excellent furniture. After hia words of welcome, Mr. Kipp acted aa master of ceremon ies for the remainder of the pro gram. He introduced Mr. James Gibbs who sang the lovely song, God Bless this House; and Mrs. Margaret J.
