There was an aged negro, loved by our family, perished in a fire a few years ago. . . . Abe had an unselfish ness about him and a love for children which endeared him to those of us who walked closely with him as he mowed the lawn and tended the garden and sat on a log with us sometimes to discuss human beings and their weaknesses and their strengths. . . . After his charred body was raked from the embers of bis home, Jim Rivers wrote a column extolling the virtues of a generous soul, in which be expressed the fond hope that when Abe plodded along the golden streets in the celestial dty, that the avenue would be flanked by hordes of little boys and girls, to whom he could pass out nickels from a bottomless sack of shining coins, and smile forever in the radiance of their dimpled laughter. And we hope Fred Kirby is around for 300 years te gladden the Susies and the Anns and the Cindys and the Butches and the Chucks and the Bills, and that there may be an eternity filled with Calico horses and with boys and girls clapping their chubby hands and bringing perpetual happiness to one whose generous heart was big enough to hold an encompassing love for every single one of them. Miss North Carolina, radiantly beautiful, tells us she loves the hills, and that she couldnt even see the rain for the infectious happiness and generosity of the people who came out to welcome her. ... It was her first trip to this vaulted region, she says, and her bright eyes held a trace of mist when she told her new-made friends goodbye, with a promise to return when summertime casts her shimmery mantle over the high hills. . . , We're gonna be 'specting heft And again we'd make our best manners to the committee members who fashioned the decorations, planned the parade, and worked through the nights getting things in shape for the opening. . . . Nick Stakias, chairman; Geroge Flowers, pa rade chairman; Joe McClung, A. E. McCrary, Charles Isley, Crayte Teague and David Spainhour get eur personal thanks and a tip of our faded fedora. . . . They performed a mag nificent service, as did city officials, the police department, other town employees, electricians, and all who contributed to the success of the civic project.
