Many Students Take Part
In Winter Teaching Plan
Many local students are taking
part in the winter quarter student
teaching program of Appalachian
State Teachers College. In this pro
gram, which started November 29
and will end March 2, students de
vote approximately twelve weeks
to student teaching in the field for
which they have been preparing.
Mrs. Lois Teague Hayes, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Bynum D. Tea
gue of Route 3, Boone, is teaching
the first grade under the supery
sion of Mrs. Amy Kincaid.
Miss Margaret Sheittll. Haga
man, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Hagaman is now living in
Hickory, and ia teaching physical
education at Grandview Junior
High School under the supervision
of Mr. Richard Janies.
Joseph Keith Van Dyke, son of
Mr. and Mrs. C. C.. Van Dyke is
teaching social studies at Wilkes
Central High School in Wilkesboro,
with Mr. Vannoy as supervisor.
Hiss Linda Ramellee Rea daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Frank
lin Rea, is teaching French under
the supervision of Mr. Hendron at
West Wilkes High School.
Jerry Lee West is teaching bio
logy at Statesville Senior High
School in Statesville under the
supervision of Mm. Lois Goforth.
He is the son of the Rev. and Mrs.
Rex West.
John Keith Greene, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph G. Greene is teach
ing physical education and social
/todies at Blowing Rock High
School under the supervision of
Mr. Carter Lentx.
Edwin Bingham Taylor, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Taylor is
teaching physical education and
social studies at Ashe Central High
School with Mr. Morris Walker as
supervisor.
As part of the student teaching
program, the Appalachian student
usually lives in a community near
the school and participates in
community activities as well as
school activities. The student de
votes full time to the school and
gradually takes over the full teach
ing load, always under the super
vision of the supervising teacher
and the principal. The local
school's participation with Appa
lachian's student teaching pro
gram is a valuable asset to the
general education program of
North Carolina.
U. N. finds sis alive in African
plane crash.
Shores Funeral
Is Held Monday
Dennis Sanders Shores, 40, died
December 2 at the Watauga Hospi
tal. Funeral services were held on
Monday at 2 p. m. in Shulls Mills
Baptist Church with burial in the
Piney Grove cemetery. Rector
Joel Wilson was in charge of the
services.
Mr. Shores was a native of Wa
tauga county and served in World
War II.
He is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Pauline Luttrell Shores, three
daughters, Thelma Lee, Patricia
Ann and Eva May and two sons,
James and Glenn, all of the home;
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude
M. Shores of Route 3, Boone;
three brthers, Voight Shores and
Homer Shores, Route 3, Boone and
C. M. Shores Jr., Banner Elk.

President Chamber Commerce
Lut Saturday'* crowd to witness
one of Boone* greatest parades,
was perhaps, the largest In his
tory. I have been here since 1880,
and I do not recall a larger crowd
It was real good to have all these
tine people in our town.
A Splendid Job
1 am glad that we appointed
the ones we did on our Christmas
Holiday Merchants Association
Committee. Everyone did a great
job.
Our thanks goes to everyone
who had anything whatsoever to
do with it, such as the officials
and employees of the town, the
two fine power companies, New
River and Blue Ridge, the city
police force who stood in the rain
and helped with the traffic, the
many, many fine sponsors of the
besutiful floats, the county and
state traffic officials, the fine cov
erage by our local radio station
WATA, and our fine local news
paper, the Watauga Democrat.
With such a team it was impossible
to fail.
Christ In Christmas
Our sincere thanks goes to the
Fine Arts Department of the Wo
man! Worthwhile Club, who en
couraged us to "Put Christ Back
Into Christmas." Their committee
consisted of Mrs. A E. South, Mrs.
Herman W. Wilcox, Mrs. DeWitt
Barnett and Mrs. Roy Rufty.
Blue ribbons were awarded to
the winners who were Carolina
Pharmacy, first prise; Walker's
Jewelry Store, second; Boone Drug
Co., third; and Newton's Depart
ment Store fourth.
To this club goes our apprecia
tion. Our fine churches supported
these events 100%.
Christmas Light*
It is regretted that we were un
able to put up more lights on King
Street Our first plans were to
extend the lights on (town King
Street, but the power pole* be
yond Carolina Pharmacy are un
der contract to be removed and
new onea placed in during the holi
day*, and too, there waa no power
line to connect to.
It is hoped by not year we
can work out something with the
telephone company to place lights
on the north aide of King Street
Much improvement can and will be

zines, unless it is our local schools.
