ZSrd Year of Square DeaHa*"^?""* i: Family Situation I To Be, Says Exten All of us lemefubcr that old song, "The Old Grey Mare, She Aint What She Used To Be.". Well, the family isn't what it lined to be either. Let us take a look at the family situation. Mia* Frances Jordan, family relations specialist for the N. C. Agricultural Extension Ser vice, says the most significant differences in the cycle of the family today as compared with 90 years ago relate to birth, marriage and death. We marry at a younger age and have a shorter period of child-bearing. Children are launched from the home into career or mar riage when parents are under 80 and the succeeding middle aged period when the couple is alone at home is a phenomenon not enjoyed by most families two generations ago. With the increase in life span of the hus band and wife, there are more families today where the couple has entered the last stage of the cycle, the aging years. What are some other factors which are creating changes In family relationships? Miss Jor dan says each family unit is no longer an economically inde pendent producing group but rather a unit in which Children are a financial liability. "More goods and services are obtained outside the home creating a shift in the functions of the family unit," reports Miss Jordan. 'The family does not exist Just for the purpose of providing food, clothing and housing, but assumes the re sponsibility for the basic per sonality development of its members." "We enjoy a higher standard of living today which is due in part to a higher level of educa tion of family members, better health and technological ad vances," she says. "But with it, we have greater status seeking pressures from business, Indus try and even our neighbors." "The employed homemaker is creating sweeping changes In family living today. It is no longer a question of whether she should or should not work, but rather how the family can adjust effectively to the situa tion. Mall orders filled. l-3*p Vol What It Used sion Specialist considered include the atti tudes of the family members about her working outside the home; the quality of substitute care for children; and the abi lity of all family members to share the home responsibili ties." Miss Jordan say* social sec urity has allowed many couples to retire earlier in life and they are more independent of their children financially and other wise. "Another change with far reaching effects on families is the gradual shift from farm to rural non-farm or urban living," she adds. "Although it is true that some families do not sem to have the strength to withstand today's demands, the majority of our families in North Carolina are happier than in previous gen erations," declares Miss Jor dan. "Family administration is on a more democratic basis with all family members having a greater share in decision mak ing, division of labor, ' recrea tional activities, and other as pects of living together through out the family life cycle," she concludes.
