Preventive Vaccines Are Of Great Value To Mankind Never in the history of the world has It been possible to protect one's self and family against so many serious diseases easily and effectively through preventive vaccines, says Dr. Mary Michal of the local Health Department. The big problem i* that many people do not take advantage of these advances off ered by medical science, she emphasises. "All of us have heard a great deal about polio vaccine," she said, "and most of us have been immunized against this crippling disease, although many still have not. But we tend to forget the potential killers smallpox, tetanus, whooping cough and diptheria. During the past year there were several out breaks of small pox in Great Britain. A possibly serious out break at New York City's Idle wild Airport was thwarted by quick action of health officers who vaccinated all those ex posed to a boy who was strick en with the disease. And dur ing the winter of 1961-1962 there was an outbreak of diphtheria in Omaha, Nebraska. Tetanus is a constant threat in any in Jury." Mr. Michal continued: "In World War I the British Army suffered 800 cases per 100,000 battle wounded men early be fore any preventive care was developed, and later 100 cases per 100,000 after antitoxine giv en at the time of such injuries. The U. S. Army had IS cases per 100,000 battle wounded, an titoxin then in use. In World War II the British in men im munized by tetanus toxid the rate of cases of tetanus in bat tle-wounded was S.5 per 100. 000; and in the U. S. Army 0.2 per 100,000; and U. S. Navy 0." Dr. Michal said all babies should be given injections against diphtheria, whooping eough and tetanus beginning at the early months of age. These (hots may be conveniently giv en in a "triple" vaccine contain ing all therwe protectors. A po lio shot or oral vaccine can be ?btained at the same visit to the doctor. Vaccination against smallpox should be obtained during the first years of life. "For adults as well as chil dren," Dr. Michal said, "booster doses of vaccines are necessary from time to time in order to maintain protection from these diseases. To prevent these ser ious and possibly fatal diseases everyone should keep a record of previous vaccinations and find out from his doctor when the next booster doses are due." Tax Refunds May Be Made In U. S. Bonds If you're in line for ? refund on your 1962 Federal income tax return, County Savings Bonds Chairman A. T. Adams has a word for you. Two words, In fact: Take bonds. This year for the first time, Mr. Adams points out. Uncle Sam is making it possible for you to take your refund in Series E Savings Bonds by the simple expedient of putting an "X" in the appropriate box on the tax form. Last year some 40 million taxpayors received cash re funds on their taxes. Judging from samplings of opinion, a lot of them would have pre ferred to get their money in Savings Bonds If they'd had the chance. Bend Chairman A. T. Adams, who is assistant vice-president of The North western Bank, wants to make sure any of them who live in Watauga County know they now have that chanoe. The way the bond option works is simple. The Treasury will issue the smallest possible number of E Bonds of the larg est denominations to cover the amount of the refund. If there's anything left over, a check will be written for the balance. The one complication comes if the cash balance is from one to 99 cents, since the check-issuing apparatus can't handle anything lew than a dollar. Details are given in the instructions. What about joint returns? Mr. Adams gave us the answer to ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE Having qualified m Admin istrator of the estate of Ralph Guly Wilfong, late of the coun ty of Watauga, State of North Carolina, this it to notify those paving claims against the es tate of the said deceased to present them to me within twelve months of the Jilc here of or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their recovery. Those indebted to the estate are asked to make immediate payment. This 15th day of January, 1963. Charles E. Wilfong. Captain Charles ?. Wilfong 102 Norton St Travis AFB, California VULAk. Miller Industries Mfgs. ofu 605 Bristol Rd. 264-8824 that one, too. "John and Mary Smith" on the tax return be comes "John or Mary Smith" on the bond registration, making them co-owners. Know The Weather By E. H. SIMS When is the tornado season? In what direction should you look (or tornadoes, in case of a tornado warning? The tornado season will begin in about two months. Tornadoes are more frequent in spring and early summer than any other time of the year, although they occur at other times during the year. Some have been reported during recent winter months. Tornadoes can be expected to approach from the west, as a general rule. They may come from the northwest or the southwest, but ? in moat cases ? they will come from a wester ly direction. They do not move at great speed, but the circular winds within the funnel are very high velocity winds. They should be avoided always, and because of thetr smallness, one can practically always dodge them in an automobile, or even sometimes on foot ? in daylight.
