Speaking
Of Golf
By JOE MAPLES
Local players have been get
ing out for some golf during
recent days, especially when
the weather has been nice. We
have one report to the effect
that Guy Hunt is spending a
considerable amount down at
the Tri-County Course near
Whitnel. On one of his recent
rounds, he reported having
made a birdie on the first hole
and 44 for the first nine, but
after that it seems that he quit
counting. O. K. Richardson,
Jim CounciU, Chet Weber and
one other whose name escapes
me at the moment, played at
Tanglewood the - other day. O.
K. turned in a very respectable
score of 84. No other scores
were forthcoming at the time.
For some reason, most people
are reluctant to discuss their
scores this time of year. It
mould appear they wish to keep
them a secret so future oppon
ents won't know the progress
they are making. The question
is, which way are they progres
sing?
A group of players including
Roger Thomas, Howard Cot
trell and myself are planning a
golfing week-end at Pinehurst
the week-end of March 1st, 2nd
and 3rd and the more players
we have, the better time for
all. So anyone interested in
joining this group, give some
of us a ring.
Estel Wagner's Foothills De
velopment, Incorporated group
is planning a meeting in the
very near future, possibly this
week, in order to elect oficers.
It is not official as yet, but it
is no secret that they have
hopes of starting work on their
go^f course sometime this year
if the necessary details can be
worked out.
The Carolinas Section, PGA
is having its annual Education
al and Teaching Seminar in
Charlotte at the Barclay Cafe
teria on February 19 and 20.
There will be several very in
teresting speakers on the pro
gram and anyone who may be
in Charlotte during this time is
welcome to drop in.
Grapplers Give
Demonstration
The wrestling team of Appa
lachian High School gave a dem
onstration in assembly ? Friday,
with Coach Steve Gabriel in
Charge.
' Coach Gabriel stated that the
purpose of the program was to
acquaint students with the
sport of wrestling, particularly
the freshmen and new students.
He had various members of
the wrestling team demonstrate
various offensive and defensive
measures used by wrestlers. He
also discussed in detail the
method of scoring.
After this discussion-demon
stration period, tryout matches
were held between BeAny Mor
etz and Ronnie Smith, Johnny
Stacy and Mack Critcher, and
Weidon Critcher and Larry
Hayes for Saturday's match
against Myers Park. Winners
were Ronnie Smith, Mack Crit
cher, and Larry Hayes.
AHS Grapplers Win
Over Myers Park
By WILLIAM HIGH
The Appalachian High School
wrestlers scored a decisive vic
tory over the grap^lers of My
ers Park High School of Char
lotte Saturday night at the old
college gym. The final score
was 38 to 4.
Both teams had undefaatad
records going into the match,
and many people had predicted
that this would be one of the
toughest matohes of the year
for the Appalachian matmen.
It was in some respects, be
cause only two of the Appala
chian wrestlers, state champ
ions Mack Critcher and Baker
Edmisten, were able to register
pins. Edmisten pinned Ronny
Gleason of Myers Park in the
first period. This marked the
sixth straight time that the 165
pounder had pinned his man in
the first period.
The victory was very import
ant, because Myers Park and
Beaver Creek are considered
the toughest teams in this dis
trict. In the two previous
matches with Beaver Creek,
Appalachian defeated the Beav
ers by scores of 41 to 3 and 43
to S. Hie only losses in indivi
dual matches were Gary Greene,
a freshman who was wrestling
his first match and Gary Brown,
who was disqualified by the
refree. The disqualification
came at a point in the match
when Brown was winning. My
en Park could manage only
two draw* in their dual' meet
with Appalachian.
Appal: 'hian ran its record
to 84) \rith the victory. Five
Appalachian wrestlers who have
wrestled more than five match
es are still undefeated. They
are Jerry Critcher (7-0, 3 pins);
Royce Carroll (70-1, 1 pin);
Mack Critcher (84), 4 pins);
Boyce Brown (8-0, 5 pins); and
Baker Ed mis ten (7-0, 6 pins).
After eight matches only one
Appalachian wrestler has lost
more than one individual match.
