Speaking Of Golf By JOE MAPLES ?HMMM It looks as though there will be a pretty good group of play era from Boone making the trip to Plnehurst this week-end to play the Whispering Pines Golf Course. Included among those who have indicated an interest are Roger Thomas, Austin Adams, J. C. Cline and Howard Cottrell. Anyone else desiring to go should contact one of the above or myself. We plan to stay in a motel Friday night and meet at Whispering Pines on Saturday morning at about 9 o'clock ready to play about thirty-six holes. Let's hope we can get a break in the weather. Some of our local players played the Morganton course Monday, and what a fine day for playing a round too. Guy Hunt, J. C. Cline, Richard Kelley and Bert Ellis stopped off for a round on their way to the Moose meeting. I under stand the traps and fast greens gave the boys a little trouble and as a result, no scores were announced. The flu "bug' caught up with me while in Charlotte last week for the Annual Educational Seminar of the Carol inas PGA Section and I had to come back home without attending. From the reports that I have received though, this was the finest Seminar ever held in the Sec tion with almost eighty profes sionals from the two states tak ing part. Highlight of the meet ing was an address given by Lou Stroung, President a I the PGA of America, and one given by Richard Tufts, former presi dent of the United State* Golf Association. An' award was pre sented to Joe Davis of Spartan burg for the outstanding Job he did as president of the Care Unas Section for four years. This was presented during ? banquet which was held on Tuesday night The next big event for Caro linas professionals will be the annual sectional championship to be held at New Bern next week. Getting things underway will be the Pro-Pro champion ship on Thursday followed by the fifty-four hole champion ship. Joe Cheves will be my partner in the Pro-Pro which was won last year by the team of Mack Main and Terry Atkins. Defending champion in the tournament proper is Davis Lore of Charlotte.
