Wrestling Separates Men, Boys By LARRY PENLEY W r A 1 1 i n g competition in Boone continues to separate the men from the boyi. Every year the cry goes up that a new champion has em erged in the state to challenge the perennial wrestling champs from Appalachian State Teach ers College and Appalachian High School. Frank "Dutch" Meyer, wrest ling coach at ASTC, said, "Wrestling has been around Boone for the past 29 years, and the college and high school still have teams that are second to none in the state. High schools and colleges that have been willing to wrestle with the Boone squads have found that the competition here is more than jug talk. "Wrestling is not declining in Boone, but is probably re ceiving the greatest emphasis in the history of the college. This year six classes in wrest ling are being taught in the college physical education de partment with 75 boys partici pating in these classes." R. W. Watkins, veteran wrest ling coach at Appalachian Col lege for 25 years until his re tirement in 1958, declared that other schools in the state may have more boys participating in the sport, but the college and high school are more concern about quality than mere num bers. During his tenure of service, Watkins' wrestlers took on any team from Duke to Harvard that would wrestle and rolled up an impressive record of 235 victories out of 250 dual meets. ASTC established and still holds the national record for one season's scoring in points. Appalachian Colege, partici pating in 18 AAU Tournaments, had never lost in one of these tournaments until two years ?go when North Carolina Stat* edged Appalachian for the vic tory. Year after year ASTC had produced championship teams. A few year! ago, the college had a string of 49 victories over a four year period, broken in an upset match with a strong Franklin-Marshal College team from Pennsylvania. This year 1 Coach Meyer led hi? grapplers to a 10-0 record, and the squad wiH participate in the NAIA competition in Bloomsburg, Pa., March 12-16. The new coach believes that wrestling should be encouraged in the elementary and junior high levels. If North Carolina schools are to continue to com pete with tennis from Pennsyl vania and other states, tt will be naeeasary to start the young sters early to enable them to develop experience for compe titive high school and college wrestling. Appalachian, ? pioneer in college wrestling in North Car olina, continues year after year to supply the majority of wrest ling coaches for high schools In this state and Virginia. Appalachian Hieh School, coached by ASTC alumnus Steve Gabriel, has not lost a dual wrestllni mutch in It vara. Coach Gabriel's charges have won the state champion ship seven times in the last ten years'. ASTC wrestlers this season racked up 242 points in 10 meets as compared to 97 points for the opposition, Meyer said that his teams have not tried to run up the score, but as much as possible he has used hi* second team. Fourteen men will earn letters in a squad that has wrestled only eight weights this season. Meyer is delighted and en couraged that other colleges in North Carolina are participat ing in wrestling, and he hopes that in the near future he will not have to go out of the state to find competition for Appala chian. This year only two North Carolina colleges were willing to wrestle with the Mountain eers.
