Phone 246-2501 II Doctor Talk By JOHN B. REMBERT, H. D. Diabetes, more specifically diabetae roeiytus, is a condition affecting the body when the in ability to convert sugars and starches into the energy needed for normal activity arises. It is a condition, which prior to the development of insulin in 1922, was almost invariably fatal. To day, thanks to modern medical sciervee, the well-controlled dia betic can expect to live out a virtually normal lifetime. The exact cause of diabetes ip not known, but from pro longed and exhaustive studies, it is Iriown that in order for the body to metabolize or break down carbohydrates, insulin Is necessary. The insulin required by the body is classed as a hor mone and is manufactured by the pancreas. For a diabetic condition U> arise, several con ditions, singularly or in combi nation, may exist? the pancreas gland may not produce any in sulin, or it may produce tkis hormone in insufficient quan tities; or the gland may produce enough insulin, but for some reason the release of insulin into the circulatory blood is in adequate for the body needs; or the proper amount of insulin may be .produced but some other chemical in the body may de stroy or interfere with the in sulin released: in any event the symptoms of diabetes develops. This "error of metabolism" is a universal disease, affecting persons of all ages. Statistics show that susceptibility to dia betes does increase with age. The incidence of onset is great Legal Notices EXECUTRIX NOTICE Having qualified as Executriv of the will of Mri. Jessie Mc G uu"e, late of the county of Watauga, State of North Caro lina, this is to notify those hav ing claims against the estate of the said deceased to present them to me within 12 months of the date hereof, or this no tice will be pleaded in bar of their recovery. Those indebted to the estate are asked to make immediate payment. This March 2. 1962? MRS. C. L. HOLLAND, Executrix, Care of Wade E. Brown, Attorney, Boone, N. This the 18th day of March, 1963. O. H. Foster, Clerk of the Superior Court Watauga County. S-21-4c<6 Miller Industries Mfgt. of doers aid windows Awnings, siding, guttering, tub enclosures, gists. Repairs by Factory Trained Personnel 605 Bristol Rd. 264-8824 est in men by their fifty-first ' year, and ir^ women by the fifty fifth year. Disregarding all jokes I to the contrary, married men statistically, in this incidence at 1 least, have the edge over un- ' married men, the incidence be- i ing higher in the latter. The opposite Is true in women, un married women appearing to be less susceptible than married women. ? Statistics also show that child birth increases the incidence of diabetes, and likewise the rate increases in mothers giving |t>irth to large infants over mothers having small infants. The overall statistical chances ( for development of diabetes is found in the female between the ages of 43 and 70, this fe male having a family history of diabetes, being on the plumpish side, and one who gives birth to several large babies. At the time of a hospital [ admission, or the initial visit to a family physician, the reader will recall that in reviewing the family history of diseases a question regarding diabetes is always asked, since this is one among several diseases that can be inherited. If a situation ex ists where both parents are dia betic, then all their offspring may be diabetic; or If one par ent is diabetic and the other has a history of diabetics in the family, then there is a fifty fifty chance of all their children becoming diabetic. One parent may have a history of diabetes in the family, but if the other parent is normal and has no family history ?f dia betes, then their children have a twenty-five percent chance of having the disease. One parent may have a history of diabetes in the family, but if the other parent is normal and has no family history Qf dia betes, then their offspring should not develop the disease. The review of the statistical possibilities of transmittiag dia betes brings vip the question, often asked by diabetics, wheth er diabetics should consider marriage. No one should let this disease interfere with his happi ness, and being a diabetic gen erally creates no special prob lems other than the necessary diet limitations and the limita tions placed upon physical ac tivity. Many mild cases of diabetes, especially in eldedly persons, are successfully controlled by diet and physical activity restric tions alone. If the diabetic is overweight, then diet is used to bring the weight to normal, and diet restrictions must be bal anced with the patient's physical activity; a fanner needs more food than an office worker; a mother with active youngsters needs more than a woman with servants; and a young boy play ing ball and running needs more than an eldedly person.
