Cancer Campaign To Commence April 22 Mrs. Walter A. Hawkinson, president of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, announces that the week of April 22 has been set aside for crusaders to contact all homes and individuals. The Wa tauga county volunteer* will be giving of their time and energy to provide local citizens with adequate information about the danger*" 6f taticer, Kow to" go |bout getting help when it is needed, and to provide every one with an opportunity to join the fight to conquer cancer. Citizens are urged to welcome their crusading neighbors, to use the helpful literature that is provided, and to give at free ly as they can to support this important health organization. The American Cancer Society cannot function without this crusade. The personal contacts are necessary to make all con scious of how important it Is to have regular checkups. The funds collected enable the all important research pro gram to find a cure for can cer, and to operate cancer de tection centers, to provide treat ment fer cancer victims, and to serve as an information center for citizens of Watauga county who need information on can cer. BUDGET CUTS The Senate Armed Services Committee cut out $771,000,000 in Defense Department requests for aircraft, missiles and other military hardware. But it agreed with the House in voting an extra 9363,700,000 to speed development of the RS-70 re connaissance strike bomber. The House voted a reduction also of $91,964,000 in appropia tions for the Post Office De partment. This came despite the objections of Postmaster Day and postal employes.
