Membership Fee 25c par $1*0.00 Face Amonnt Doctor Talk By JOHN B. REMBERT, M.D. Millions of Americans are disabled at tiiia time by body del eels, and daily and yearly toe number is increasing. In this age of the "miracle drugs" such a situation seems incredi ble, but body impairments con tinue to develop. Leading the list of impair ments, is that of poor hearing, or deafness followed by defects of the limbs, back and trunk, and the lower extremities. Next in order of frequency are blind ness and other visual impair ments. Recent studies show that women, in general, are more subject to "eye defects than men. This study further re veals that approximately sev enty-seven million persons wear eye-glasses in this country, the figure not including six and a half million persons wearing contact lenses. Thousands of young children will enter grade school for the first time in the fall so physical checkups will be in order; especial attention should be paid to the examination of the preschool child's eyes. It is es timated that approximately one child in every twenty has a major eye defect. Chief among the eye defects in pre school children is refrac tive errors, accounting for about 70 per cent of all causes. Another leading cause is found to motor anomalies, that is eye muscle imbalance. The detec tion and early treatment of eye defects in children provides physiological advantages, and, in addition, the acceptance of treatment at this young age is often dramatic. The number of children be ing born blind or losing their vision by school age has rapidly decreased in the past ten to fifteen years. Credit must be given to the "miracle drugs" for one of the leading causes in the past was ophthalmia neona torum, caused by gonorrheal in fection. Such infection has now beep virtually eradicated be cause of the widespread use of antibiotics. Parents should be watchful for any of the common danger signals which may mean visu al distrurbances of a serious na ture ? such as persistent red ness of the eyes; crossing of the eyes; distorted shape of un equal pupil size; persistent dis charge, crusting, or tearing; and persistent discomfort or pain, especially after an eye injury.
