Mrs. Willie Sims became pres ident of the Alpha Beta Chap ter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority Thursday night, as the unit of the International Hon orary Society for Women in ed ucation ended its season with a dinner in the dining room of the Daniel, Boone Hotel. Mrs. Sims is a primary teach er in the Parkway School of Wa tauga county, teaching the first grade. Mrs. Reba Shoemake installed the officers. The table holding the emb lems of the club was covered with the traditional green. An attractive arrangement of pur ple gladioli and yellow baby mums in a cornucopia centered the table. The gold shield and Greek letters of the club flank ed this arrangement. The following officers were installed: President ? Mrs. Willie Sims. Vice-president ? Mrs. Pansy Taylor. Recording secretary ? Blue Ridge Garden Club The Blue Ridge Garden Club held ltf regular monthly meet ing it the home of lira. J. B. Winkler on Blowing Bock Road, May 18. lira. R. H. Hardin and Mr*. C. H. Hendrix were hoa teaaea with Mrs. Winkler. A luncheon waa served to seven teen members and two guests, lira. B. J. Councill and Mrs. Grady Farthing. The buaineas meeting, con ducted by the president, Mrs. W. H. Plemmons, waa concern ed chiefly with beautification plans, the Daniel Boone Garden, and the flower show and home tour acheduled for early Aug ust. The program consisted of two parts. First were three brief reports of the State con vention by Mrs. H. M. Cooke, Mrs. Lee Reynolds, and Mra. B. W. S tailings. The second phaae waa a plant exchange and aale presented by the Horticul ture Committee. Plants, contri buted by members, were sold at auction with Mrs. J. C. Cline aa auctioneer. This Is an annual club project and has resulted in a greatly Increased interest in horticulture among club members. Brushy Fork Home Club The Brushy Fork Home De monstration Club met at the home of Mrs. Clint Baird, Thursday, May 18, at 7:30 p. m. The President, Mrs. Elizabeth Norria, presided. The secretary read the minutes of laat meet ing. A few selected scripture vers es were read by Mrs. Reatha Wilson and Mra. Ivalee Dancey led in prayer. The group sang Clementine rod repeated the Club Collect. A committee waa nominated to arrange a both for Achieve ment Day. They were Mrs. Louise Baird, Mrs. Ivalee Dan cey, and Mra. Reatha Wilson. Miss Maude Perry, Mrs. Iva lee Dancey, and Mrs. Reatha Wilson attended County Coun cil. Mrs. John Miller showed some very lovely pieces of ceramics which she had made. Miss Maude Perry showed n craft item which she made. A project report on Health and Beauty waa given by Mrs. Alma Phillips. Mrs. Danner showed some slides on storage and cabinet space. Refreshments were served to 16 members and two visitors, Miss Barbara Cap pi and Mrs. John Miller. . Unique Floral Arrangement Shown At Hickory Meeting Wednesday night, during the Spring Flower Show presented by the Hickory Garden Council at the Corinth United Church of Chriat, the show director took time out from her regular activitiea to tell the intereating story of a unique floral arrange ment which combines flowers and plastic insulated cable made by Superior Cable Cor poration. Mrs. Harry M. Snyder, Jr., ex plained that the unusual ar rangement was deaigned by Mrs. Robert Cody, a former re sident of Hickory who now makes htr home in Boone where she end Mr. Cody are now owner* of Highland Hills Hotel. Entered is the flower show held last October, the ar rangement was created to re present a category entitled "Our Town", la which entries were to interpret local indus try. Hrs. Cody's creation, show ing lovely flowers in shadee which complemented the bril liant tones of the color-coded mult! -conductor cables which were used, was selected for a coveted "Tri-Cotor" award at the Fall Show. Town And Country Club Meets The Town and Country Home Demonstration Club held their monthly meeting May 16, at the home of < Mr*. Broadua Jones with Mrs. Earl Petrey aa co hostess. Mrs. John Houck presided and gave the devotional. Mrs. Oscar Danner gave a program on "storage and built-ins" illustrat ing various designs with slides. The group was invited to see the basement in Mrs. Jones' house that had recently been remodeled featuring a nuipber of built-in* and storage walls. Mrs. Herman Eggers had on display several oil paintings and a sampler picture. Mrs. Sophia Miller brought a beauti ful wall placque made of rice, macaroni and artificial flowers which had been sprayed silver. The meeting was adjourned with reading the collect. Re freshments were served by the hostesses. Gardenerettes Club Meets The Gardenerettes Garden Club met Thursday evening Hay 16th at the home of Mrs. John Hollar on Reynold* Drive. A business meeting was con ducted by the president, Mrs. Jimmy Winkler. Mrs. Winkler gave a report on the State Gar Laurel Garden Club Meets The Mountain Laurel Junior Garden Club met in the Daniel Boone Native Gardens Saturday morning May 18. The purpose for meeting there was to plant a walnut tree in observance of Arbor Day. Officers as follows were elect ed: Beth Lawrence, president; Dee Wilson, vice-president; Sus an Lawrence, secretary; Mar garet Winkler, treasurer. It was announced that the club received three awards dur ing the State Garden Club Con vention held recently in Char lotte. They were: a junior hon or roll certificate; a blue rib bon for the club scrap book; a junior achievement award and also an award as winner in the National Litterbug Coloring Contest was presented to Terry Hollar. Mrs. David Spainhour and Mrs. John Hollar were in charge of this meeting. den Club Convention, which she attended In Charlotte. Fol lowing the committee reports, Mrs. Jean Winkler explained the programs for the coming year and passed out the new Year Books. Plans and programs for the Mountain Laurel Junior Garden Club for the new year were dis cussed. The club decided to meet Tuesday May 21, to plant the club beautification plot, lo cated on King St. in front of the Todd and Higgins Esso sta tion. McCullen, Jr., of Pine hurst, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Wat ers and Mr. Clive Huet of Cha pel Hill. Y.M.W. Club Holds Meeeing The Y.M.W. Club met May 6 at the Sandy Flat picnic grounds. Further plans for the club were discussed. There will be a meeting Monday, May 20, 7 p. m. at the County Agent's of fice. Anyone out of high school 18 years of age or above is in vited to attend. The club program consists of an educational program, com munity projects, and whole some recreation. Our thanks go to our advis ers, Mr. W. C. Committees in charge are Mrs. Minnie Norris, chairman; Mrs. Russell Norris and Mrs. Conley Church, assist ants. The Dixie Classic Fair in WinstanSalem will be open October 8-12.
