Dr. Braxton Harris, assistant regis trar in charge of admissions at Appalachian State Teachers Col lege, laments that sometimes it reveals a great deal of "lack of knowledge" about college, both on the part of young people and on the part of their parents. Here are some basic facts that this group ought to know: In the 1930's, only about one million young people were in college. By 1961, according to the National Education Associ ation, the number had jumped to somewhat over three million, and it's still going up. This means that something over one third of all young people of college age (18-21) are in school. The number of colleges in the U. S. continues to increase. In the 1930's there were 'fewer than 1,000. The 1962-63 Educa tion Directory, just published by the U. S. Office of Educa tion. shows that we have a total of 2,100 institutions of higher education now. Of these, 628 offer at least two years of college work, but less than four. They are, generally speaking, in the junior college or com munity college class. Many are quite similar to major colleges except in the length of program offered, and the number is growing fast. Last year there were only 393 in this category. There ae today 1,447 degree granting institutions, of which 223 offer the doctor of philo sophy as well as bachelor's and master's degree. Only about one in four of the students who start collcge ever finish. There were 394,889 bachelor's and first-professional degree* conferred in 1960, plus 74,4^7 second level degrees (us ually the master's), and 9,829 doctor's degrees. There are just twice as many men in college as women. What do college students study? A survey done at the University of Michigan in 1959 showed the following: agricul ture, 1.38%; business, 19%; ed ucation, 19.8%; engineering, 13%; biological sciences, 10%; humanities, 11%; physical sci ences, 8.6%;. social sciences, 9.5% ; other, 7.3% undecided, .4%; not reported, 2.1%. How about the cost of going to college? The same Michigan survey showed that the cost of one year may vary from $500 to $3,540 or more. The average was shown to be $1,550. The figure moves upward a bit year by year, especially when col leges are forced to increase their tuition. WJ10 pays the bill? Again, the Michigan study shows that 27.6 per cent have their whole way paid by. mother and dad. The percentage is higher for girls than for boys. The family paid the way for 21.4 per cent of the men, for 39.5 per cent of the women. A considerable number paid their way by a combination of money from home and their own earnings. The rest met ex penses by various combinations from home, working, and schol arship aid. Just under 9 per cent of the men went through on the basis of their. own work and scholarship aid, without a cent front home.. NOTICE OP ADMINISTRATION Having qualified a* the ad ministratrix of the aetata of William H. Naedham, late of the county of Watauga, State of North Carolina, this is to notify those having claim* against the estate of the said deceased, to present them to me within 12 months of the date herecf, or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their re covery. See A?d Set DetalU At GERMAN MOBILE HOMES ^ GRANITE FALLS. N. C. What are the reasons given by those who do not go to col lege? No desire to go, or poor grades, ranks first It iaq't al ways clear whether these are separate reasons or reasons that go together. We might assume that sometimes the lack of a desire to go to collegje would re sult in the high school student's having rather poor grades. But the opposite is also possible. Next most important is the lack of money. About one fourth of all students investi gated. in the Michigan study re ported either that their services were needed at home or that they did not have the finances. About 10 per cent simply planned to take jobs on gradu ation from high school, white one-fifth to one-fourth were planning to get married or enter the military service. Notes And Comments No argument is answered by an epithet. People who read carelessly talk carelessly. Host golfers talk a better game than they play. . All buyera want price con trol; all sellers are against it. Almost anybody can justify whatever is done and believe it. Nobody has to read a news paper now that the radio and television give the news. When one general gets into politics other generals get into politics. There is no perfect prepara tion for war, regardless of ex penditures. Most people get a terrific shock when they see what the camera does to their "beauty." Man is mighty, no doubt, but insects bother men more than men bother insects! i A record for economy does not apply to appropriations for a congressman's district You can recognize youf friends by the {act that they sometimes have no favors to ask.
