The churchM a t ? Watauga may not be the biggest in the world but they can give us more religion than" we' can assimilate. Dr. Spence Start, 16th S?mmer As Pastor Blowing Rock Church c? ' Th? Blowing Rock Methodist Church opened its sixteenth summer session last Sunday, June ft. As the majority of our read ers know, this church was once on ? four point circuit, being connected with what is now the Boone Circuit. In the course of time its members died or mov ed away and the church was abandoned for many years. Six teen years ago some of the loc al Methodists decided to under take to reopen the church for the rammer cottager* and tonr i*t?. Dr. H. E. S pence of Duke University was secured at pat tor during the summer season only. He hat preached for fif teen consecutive summers here. Dr. Spence thought that he would not return to Blowing Hock this season. Last year he rounded out fifteen years as pastor here, sixty years as a Methodist minister and eighty year* o I life. This looked like the appropriate place to give up the work. He was *o sir* that he would not return he discontinued his telephone and carried all of his belongings back to Durham with him. Upon the insistence of his members and of the Bishop of this area, Dr. Spence reconsid ered his decision and has re turned for this seasoh. The opening services were well at tended Sunday and the proa pecta for the summer seem bright. Services will be held each Sunday morning at eleven o'clock. They are always arrang ed for congregational coopera tion and have the added attrac tion of being short. The ser vice* never last mpre than an hour. Persons from a docen differ ent sections of the state were there Sunday and it is expected that a large number of tourists will find this "church away frpm home" attractive. The subject for next Sunday will be "God and Family Life", ft will be especially appropriate for Father's Day. The chairman of the official board this summer is Mr. Tom Dysard, Jr. of Statesville. Dr. Spence will continue his work with the Blowing Rock Hospital as he has done for these twelve or fifteen years. He has moved to one of the Hart Cottages near the hospital. His telephone number is 295 7583. He will gladly render any services he possibly can while pastor here. The public is invitfd to at tend ? ?? ' 1 . P' DR.
