Speaking
Of Golf
By JOE MAPLES
Alter a rather cool and damp
month ol May which held down
play on local golf courses,
thine* during the pait week
have picked up considerably.
Reports from Blowing Kock and
Linville in addition to the
Boone course indicate a good
increase in play. Ke ports also
indicate that all three of the
area courses are in the best
condition ever which is good
news to players from down
state where most greens are in
the transition stage with very
little grass. It was a bad wint
er on most greens with one
course we know ol (Horganton)
having to put in new grass.
Professional Joe Cheves re
ports that his greens are com
ing along nicely and should be
ready for play in a short time.
It was really good news to
hear that one of the greatest
players of all time, Ben Hogan,
has gone back to active competi
tion, starting with the Thunder
bird tournament this past week
end.
Boone Ladies Golf An. New*
There will be a meeting of
the Boone Ladies at the golf
shop, Tuesday, June 29th at
nine o'clock and all members
are urged to attend. The Boone
Ladies have been invited to
play the Hilltop Golf Course at
West Jefferson as their guests
on Thursday, June 27th. All
ladies planning to make this
trip please sign up at the
Boone Golf Club golf shop be
fore Monday June 24th.
Two of the local ladies have
been doing quite well as of
late, Fern Hunt broke 100 for
the first time last week, not
once but twice and Marie New
ton Just missed her course re
cord of 6S the other day. Also
worthy of note, Julie Barber
won herself s season permit by
making an Eagle three on our
tenth hole. She was on the
green in two and sank a putt
of lOfi feet! This is actually a
double eagle since par for lad
ies on this hole is six.
Bruce Sudderth, a member of
the ASTC golf team for the last
several years and assistant to
Professional Roy Tinsley at the
Blowing Rock Country Club, is
turning professional. Bruce is
now in the process of making
application for apprentice mem
bership in the Carolinas Sec
tion and hopes to apply for
membership in the National
PGA within the next year.
Bruce is a very capable young
man and we wish him the beat
of luck in his chosen profes
sion.
A very well known young
man in these parte, King Trip
lett will be working in the shop
of the Boone Golf Club this
summer. Both he and Grady
Hollan are a definite asset to
our staff and win be ready at
all time* to serve the needs of
our players.
Sectional qualifying round
for the national championship
of the PGA of America was held
at the Myers Park Country
Club Monday. It turned out to
be a long, tough, wet golf
course to all the players but
Charlie Prentice of Columbia,
S>. C. was able to master it for
one good round by shooting a
three under par 00 in the
morning. He came back, playing
it safe, with a 78 and led the
qualifiers with even par 144.
Next came Jim Eiggins of Golds
boro with 140, followed by
Dick Tiddy of Charlotte with
190. Rain was the order of the

day as the torn thirty odd
players tried to beat par but far
moct, the tack was too demand
ing as th? 6800 plus yard Myers
Park course refused to yield.
Double bogeys on the lit, 7th
and 96th holea proved to be
enough to keep me from quali
fying aa my rounda of 76 and
79 missed the cutoff by five
shots. An unplayable lie, a bad
break and ? flubbed wedge
shot, in that order, were the
contributing factors to thoee bad
holes. The three players that
made it, will give the section
good representation however.
They are all fine players and
all three have played the tour at
one time or another so let's
wish them the best of luck at
Dallas.

Know The
Weather
By E. H. SIMS
b the old sayiag ? the higher
the cloud* the finer the weath
er? U*ed upon any scientific
knowledge or if it purely folk
lore and superstition?
This old belief actually ha* a
scientific foundation, since
cloud* form when air i* cooled
and moiiture particle* become
visible in riling, cooling air,
with constantly lessening mois- ]
tare capacity. Therefore, high
cloud* are < good sign.
This is mainly true in the sum
mer . . , when cumulou* cloud*
usually form every day. If there
i? a great amount of moisture
in the air, the rising air forms
clouds quickly. Therefore, if
you tee low white cumulou*
puffs quite early on a summer
morning, look for rain during
the day.
