Bushong have returned to their cottage at Valle Crucis after spending two weeks with their son, Dr. Allen D. Bushong at Bowling Green, Ohio. The children remained for a visit this week while their par ents attend the Security Life and Trust Company Convention in Winston-Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Don Simpson and son, Carroll, of College, Alaska (near Fairbanks) were guests last wek at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray L. Greene of Deep Gap. Mr. Simpson, who teaches at the University of Alaska, formerly taught at Ap palachian State Teachers Col lege. Mrs. Ella Sherwood, who has spent the last seven months in Vero Beach, Florida with her daughter, Miss Anna Mae Sher wood, arrived recently to spend the summer at her home. Kephart had as guests last week Dr. and Mrs. Eben Eybers of Johannes burg, South Africa, whom the Kepharts visited some years ago. Dr. Eybers is a retired pro fessor of education from the University of Witwatersand at Johannesburg. Mrs. Eybers was fromerly Miss Willard Goforth of Lenoir, N. C., a sister of Mr. Mark Goforth. Dr. Eybers is now editor and publisher of a monthly magazine, EENDRAG. This is the first time they have been back to the United States for 25 years and they are mak ing an extensive tour through Europe and North Africa on their return. Jaycetteg Hold Bingo Parly The June Jaycette meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Ranny Phillips. Mrs. Glean Hbdges and Mrs. Larry Klutz were co-hostesses. Mrs. Wade Wilmoth called the meeting to order. Mrs. Jim Moore read the minutes of the last meeting. In the absence of the treasurer, Mrs. Wilmoth gave the report. Several items of business were discussed. The program for the night was a bingo party. After several games of bingo refreshments were served by the M-hOsteises. The meeting was then adjourned. JOHNNY BAKER CARROLL The marriage of Carolyn Vir ginia Bumgarner and Johnny Baker Carroll was solemnized Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock, at the Perkinsville Baptist Church. The Rev. Maurice Cooper, pastor of the bride, of ficiated in the double ring' cer emony. Baskets of white and pink gladiolii, fern and seven branched candelabras decorated the church. The bride Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bumgarner of Boone. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Car roll of Boone. 1 A program of wedding music was presented by Miss Gloria Jean Hampton, organist, and Miss Jane Wilson, soloist. The couple entered the church together. The bride wore a gown of white peau de soie and set embroidered Swiss lace flowers, with long tapered sleeves ending in points at the wrist. The full back fell grace fully into a chapel sweep' train. Her bouffant veil of imported illusion was attached to a Vic toria crown of seed pearls. She carried a bouquet of lily of the valley surrounding ? purple throated white orchid. Miss Betty Bumgarner was her sister's maid of honor. Miss Jerry Bumgarner, cousin of the bride, and Mrs. Betty Carroll were bridesmaldes. Tliey wore baby blue dresses of nylon over taffeta. The maid of honor carried a colonial bouquet of white miniature carnations with pink net and satin streamers. The bridesmaids also carried co lonial bouquets of white minia ture carnations and had baby blue net and satin streameri. Mr. Dale Carroll, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man. Ushers were Mr. Conrad Greene and Mr. Bill Norris, St. Miss Mary Lee Jones, cousin of the bridegroom, presided at the guest book. The bride's mother wore a sheath dress of royal blue with matching accessories. The bridegroom's mother wore a baby blue dress wtih white Ac cessories. Both mothers wore a corsage of pink carnations. The bride is a gfaduate of Appalachian High School and is employed at Shadowliue, lac. The bridegroom is a graduate of Appalachian High School and Is employed by his father. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Cornett, Donna, Perry and Nancy of Chagrin Falls, Ohio spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Harley Perry at Silverstone and Mr. and Mrs. Burlie Cornett at Reese. Miss Craig will receive her B. S. degree from Appalachian State Teachers College in Au gust. Mr. Prestwood graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and is now enrolled in Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Loutsville, Kentucky. The wedding is planned for August 18. Fine Arts Dept. There will b? ? program of vocal and instrumental music. 50th Wedding Anniversary A luncheon was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Anderson Sunday honoring Mr. and Mrs. John H. Vines of John son City, Tenn., on their 50th wedding anniversary. Those attending included Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stagel, Johnson City; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vines, Juanita and Dean of Bethel; Mr. ' and Mrs. Dewey Tester, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Vines, Mr. and Mrs. James Vines and family, all of Route 3, Boone; Pvt. John B. Vines, Fort Jackson, 8. C.; and Mrs. John B. Vines, Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Cook and daughters of Zionville. Another very busy week his . gone by. The remodeling pro ject hi two of the apartments (over the Democrat office) it progressing. The baths are in, the painting is done and the floors in the front apartment : have been sanded and finished. I hope I can report that the en tire job is finished by this time next week. Mr. Hack Luttrell (our neigh bor) had surgery at Johnson City Eye Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee last Tuesday. He is getting along real well and might get to come home this Thursday. Mrs. Luttrell says he will go back for further surgery if he decides to come home this week. I'm glad he is doing so well! Among the notable improve ments I have seen in my recent travels are the paved parking areas at Thrift Food Center, Builders' Super Market, entire lot back of Appalachian Thea tre and a large lot at the Moun tain Market. Congratulations, all! Had a note from the Buck lands who are ipending 2 months in Alma, Oklahoma, where Dr. Buckland is teaching in a National Science Institute at Northwestern State College, Mrs. Buckland is taking an art workshop, and Janie is vaca tioning. Mrs. Buckland enclos ed a Chamber of Commerce folder of that area, which I ap preciated very much. The farms are large, average is 000 acres, and some have oil wells. Wouldn't that be convenient? Ruby Akers, who is now as sistant professor of English at Appalachian College, left Sat urday on the first leg of her journey to Norway . . > and she sailed today (Wednesday) on the S. S. Stavangerfjord from New York after visiting there a few days with friends and rela tives who went to see her off. Miss Akers recently received a Danforth grant to study litera ture of Ibsen and Bjornson for six weeks at the University of Oslo. In addition to this she will take a course in the cul ture and background of Scan danavia. I'm real excited for Ruby, who has to be an out standing teacher to get this award in the firft place. More power to her! Pat Dowling, whose marriage to George Davis of Hickory will be held at the Methodist Church July 13, was honored with a breakfast given by Sarah and Jane Gaither at the Farm House Monday thru Saturday at t ? 4 ? 7 ? 9 ? Sunday at 3 - 8:09 in Blowing Rock Thursday morning. I expected ? break fast in tbe true sense of the word and it was a feast Instead. Everything was delicious. Dont know when I have had a more relaxed, enjoyable morning. Some of our town employees recently cleaned that deep ditch and patched the street in front of our house. It is wonderful not to have to look at that men any longer and to be able to drive home without having to dodge all those deep holes hi the pavement. It was murder trying to dodge them after ? heavy rain. Anyway, thanks to those responsible. I appreci ate it so much. Roberta Hargrave gave me another real good recipe. I think she said it was given to her by Mrs. Boyce Brooks, but it will be worth your precious time to make it soon. ANGEL DELIGHT 1 large Angel Food cake bro ken in bits 2 packages lemon Jello. Let set until syrupy and whip a few miutes 1 pint whipping cream or 1 envelope Dessert Whip 1 cup crushed pineapple 1 teaspoon Schilling's Orange Peel (improves flavor) Whip cream and add all in gredients to lemon Jello and pour over cake.
