Fog, Wind . . And People
Thousands of people turned out Sunday for the 39th annual Singing on the
Mountain ? sweatered, blanketed, and at one point, umbrella'd against the
dark sun-speckled day.
It started early with startled ponies carrying little girls in three circles for a dime,
with a child waking from her third sleepy morning of camping at the foot of the
mountain ...
with quiet prayers in the chill mid-morning .
A bundled-up lady quietly giving thanks that
she could attend her thirty-seventh "sing"

gentleman who looked like Mr. Hoover . . .

were homeward-bound from a loag June week
end that marked in color, sound and prayer
an annual folk pilgrimage, bringing back the
word* of Happy John Coffey: "I aeen thuh
lightnin' but I ain't seen thuh thunder!"
