North Carolina Gives Cue To Educational Renaissance "During Governor Terry Stan ford's first two yean in office public education and the public schools moved forward faster and further, percentage wise, than did the cause and the schools in any other American State.* This was a statement by Dr. W. Amos Abrams, editor and assistant executive secretary of NORTH CAROLINA EDUCA TION, as he told faculty and students at Appalachian State Teachers College during con vocation services that the edu cational renaissance now evi dent in the South ? in the neigh bor states ? has taken its cue from North Carolina. He said, "I confidently pre dict that historians will have this to say about the last two years of Governor Sanford's ad ministration ? that even as the public schools advanced during the first two years, so will high er education move forward in North Carolina between -1963 and 1965 ? as will higher educa tion and state-supported colleges and universities in no other American State! "We stand today on the threshhold of an era of pro gress, the like of which we have not known and that which we have known is indeed but a pro logue to that which is yet to be." Dr. Abrams declared that higher education has come in to its own, and deservedly so, by action of the present Legis Uture. Some $82,000,000 a per centage increase of 38 per cent over last year's money, has been appropriated for higher-educa tion and this does not Include some $48,000,000 for capital out lay funds. "I am proud to be a Tar Heel whose legislative representa tives will take a forward step toward keeping our children in school, black and white, rich and poor, that they may look back on their youth and declare that in North Carolina every child had his chance. "I am proud of a state which will provide an educational op portunity beyond the high school through a system of com muter-type comprehensive com munity college so that whereas one high school graduate con tinues hi^ education today ? two high school graduates will do so tomorrow. In my opinion, this is the most meaningful piece of education legislation enacted into law since that which provided a public high school for all the children of all the people," Dr. Abrams said. Dr. Abrams, a former profes sor at Appalachian Colege, was introduced by Dr. D. J. White ner, dean of the colege. Dr. Whitener also introduced the summer sessions administra tion. Dr. W. H. Plemmons, presi dent of ASTC, gave a word of welcome to the student body, visiting professors and special guests.
