Fashion News This coming season offers a variety of head wear to the woman with a fancy hair-do. There are snoods,, scarfs and hoods of every shape and form and also of every fabric and of fur. The girl who is adept with crochet or knitting needle may whip up a little number which will go well with that prized cardigan or turtle necked sweater. Of if she Is good with the needle she may fashion a beautifully lined satin scarf to wear with a bare-shouldered frock. Dear Jane and Rachel, The moat exciting news thia week, Jane, concerns relatives. Rachel and I went to Charlotte Tuesday for a visit with your cousin Jimmie (Rivers Finklea), who moved there recently with her family. To fill you in on the past aeveral months, Jim mic's husband (Dr. Orion Fink lea) has completed his residen cy with Dr. Ruben Flocks, noted urologist at State University of Iowa Medical Center in Iowa City, and has joined Hawes Clinic in Charlotte. The clinic is near Memorial Hospital and they are living Just off Provi dence Road near the new Cots wald Shopping Center. I'm about to leave out the most Im portant part . . . their little Sarah celebrated her first birth day Sunday, the 25th, and on August 9 their other little girl, who has been named Ann Riv ers, arrived. Both are ador able! We are thrilled they are so near so we can see them occasionally. They promised to come for a visit before long and I hope you and Art can ar range to come at the same itme. And . . . Becky (Rivers) of Raleigh spent the week end with us. She attended the an nual meeting of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corpora tion held here Saturday. This was a big affair as usual. Nor man M. Clapp, Admiinstrator of RGA, spoke, Arthur Smith and his Crackerjacks entertain ed and fabulous door prizes were awarded ... in addition to four educational scholarships, which I think is wonderful. Jud ith Ann Henson of Vilas receiv ed one of them and we are so glad for her. Getting back to Becky ... it is a real treat to have her come for a visit . . . in fact, we would like to have her around every week end. Some of my activities last week included a luncheon at the Blowing Rock Country Club and a tea Thursday afternoon given by Mrs. Graham Denton and Mrs. Dewey Beam at the Beam home on Norwood Circle in Blowing Rock. I went to Mrs. Karl Sherrill's luncheon at the club Friday, and your daddy and I were guests of the Dick Williamsons for a buffet supper in Blowing Rock Sun day evening. All of these par ties were outstanding and thor oughly enjoyable. It would be lovely if we could do as many nice things every week. The recipe from Mrs. Char lette Jones this week will be for Spanish Stew. This was alio served at the luncheon given by the Count and Countess de Quinatnilla in Madrid. COCIDA ESPANOL 3-4 pound chick peas 2 quarts water 2 beef bones 1 lb. boned, lean pork shoulder 1 lb. chuck 1-4 lb. fat bacon 3 leeks 1 onion 3 sprigs parsley 2 carrots 1 tablespoon salt 4 medium potatoes 2 Spanish sausages (1-4 lb.) Italian saugsages could be sub stiuted. Soak chick peas in water or boil in water for 2 minutes, re move from heat and let stand one hour. Drain; reserve water. Place beef bones, pork, chuck and bacon in reserved water. Bring to a boil; skim. Add peas, leeks, onion, parsley, carrots, salt and sausages. Simmer gently for 2Vi hours or until peas are tender. Add potatoes the last 43 minutes. Remove beef bones, skim off fat; adjust seasoning. Remove and strain enough broth to serve as soup. Slice meat and vegetables. Serve in soup plates with remaining broth. Makes 6 portions. Wish I had some of this made for lunch today. The weather has turned quite chilly and this would be perfect. Vernon Brown of Los Angeles and Baxter Bryan of Brook line, Mass., came by for brief visits recently. Vernon has been in Calif, for years and is getting along real well. Baxter says he likes my columns, especially my recipies. It was good to see them. Linda Jones, our housekeep er, called a few minutes ago to say she couldn't come to work today because her little sister had been in a school bus acci dent. . . I am so sorry to hear of this and I certainly hope none of the children were ser iously injured. Hope to see you soon, Love, Mom. j August 26, 1963.
